IND vs AUS Match Preview

India will embark on an exciting white-ball trip of Australia this week, beginning with the ODI leg on Sunday at Perth Stadium. India will be making their debut in this format since winning the Champions Trophy in March, so some rust is to be expected. Australia, on the other hand, appears to be in better rhythm, despite the absence of some of its key players. Playing at home gives them a distinct advantage, and they will be confident in setting the tone early in the series.

<![CDATA[WATCH: End of Suryakumar Yadav era? Rise of Shubman Gill worries India's T20I captain!]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/end-of-suryakumar-yadav-era-rise-of-shubman-gill-worries-india-s-t20i-captain/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/end-of-suryakumar-yadav-era-rise-of-shubman-gill-worries-india-s-t20i-captain/ Sat, 18 Oct 2025 20:21:14 GMT

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has deep trust in Shubman Gill. He emerged as the successor of Rohit Sharma, who was the captain of India in all three formats of the game. Now, the board has assigned Gill as the captain of the Test and One Day International formats, which left Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I skipper of the Indian cricket team.

In the near future, can we see Gill also as the captain of India's T20I setup? Does Suryakumar Yadav have the fear of losing the captaincy to the young cricketer? The question Yadav had to face during a live program, in front of a crowd. The notable thing from the interaction is that, in his reply to the question, Yadav said that he is not afraid of the possibility.

"Dar aisa nehi lagta hay (I'm fearing as such)," SKY said. Followed by, "Whether it is on the ground or off the ground, the relationship between us is very positive. He is a very good batter as well. So I always try to perform well. It motivates me to play well."

Yadav fear of losing captaincy to Shubman Gill?

Amid the India vs Australia white ball series, where India will play 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is, starting from October 19 through the 50-over series. Yadav will lead India during the Twenty20 series. Recently, the Men in Blue brigade won the Asia Cup 2025 trophy without losing any single match in the competition. In the final, India beat archrival Pakistan. Throughout the series, Abhishek Sharma, Shubam Gill, Tilak Varma, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, and Jasprit Bumrah played the parts well, but there were concerns over the captain, Surykumar Yadav.

Yadav was not at his best and concluded the tournament without hitting any half centuries. He was in phenomenal form during the IPL 2025 with the Mumbai Indians, but his recent international form was not conventional.

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, has expressed full confidence in the star batter ahead of India’s ODI series in Australia. According to Sharma, Kohli has already accomplished everything in international cricket and doesn’t need to prove his credentials again.

Sharma highlighted that Kohli’s preparation for the tour has been thorough and expects the former captain to deliver stellar performances. The India star will be returning to international cricket for the first time since leading the Men in Blue to Champions Trophy glory on March 9.

Although Kohli was initially slated to return to Test cricket for India’s England tour and the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, he decided to retire from the format. In a heartfelt announcement, Kohli ended his 14-year Test career, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy and focusing on limited-overs cricket for the foreseeable future.

Rajkumar Sharma Talked About People’s Exceptions From Virat Kohli:

While speaking to ANI, Rajkumar Sharma shared his thoughts on Virat Kohli’s upcoming return, stating that the veteran batter looks fully prepared and motivated to perform strongly during India’s tour of Australia after months away from international cricket.

He said, “ Virat doesn't have to prove anything, he has achieved everything, the way he has played, the way he has won the matches for the country, everyone knows his contribution. He is well prepared, and whenever he is well prepared, the results are always good, and I have full faith that he will do well as usual.”

There has been growing discussion about Virat Kohli’s performance on Australia’s fast pitches and whether this series could mark his final international outing. Despite expressing interest in playing the 2027 World Cup, uncertainty remains over whether those plans will ultimately materialize.

Rajkumar Sharma lauded both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, emphasizing that their immense contributions to Indian cricket speak for themselves. He added that players of their stature no longer need to prove anything, having already established their legacy through consistent performances.

He further said, “ I would like to say that both of them are great players, and they have nothing left to prove, because the whole of India knows their contribution to Indian cricket, so if they have to prove themselves at this stage, then it will be a very funny thing.”

Rohit Sharma is currently in Australia with Team India to play an ODI series against the home team. After winning the Champions Trophy 2025, it will be his first assignment with the Men in Blue. The India vs. Australia One Day International series is scheduled to start on October 19; ahead of that, the former India captain spent a lot of time in net sessions.

Ahead of the highly anticipated series, BCCI surprisingly removed Rohit Sharma from the captaincy role and assigned Shubman Gill to the position. After years, the Mumbaikar will play for his nation only as a batter, not as a captain. It was reported that he has the desire to play the next ODI World Cup as well.

Shubman Gill is set to take center stage as India face Australia in a three-match ODI series starting October 19 in Perth. This tour will also be his first major assignment as India’s new ODI captain.

With senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to the squad, India’s batting unit looks strong and experienced. The combination of youth and seniority provides solid balance for the upcoming series.

The series is also expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Historically, Indian batters have shown consistency and adaptability on Australian pitches, which adds confidence to the team’s preparations for this important tour.

3 Batters Who Can Shine on Australian Soil:

Australia will be missing a few key players due to injuries, leaving them unable to field their strongest lineup for the ODI series. The inexperience in their middle order could be a major challenge, placing extra pressure on top-order batters like Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Marnus Labuschagne to deliver consistently.

The series also carries added intrigue as it marks Shubman Gill’s first stint as India’s ODI captain, following his earlier leadership debut in Tests abroad. With both teams eyeing early momentum, the focus will now shift to the batters expected to dominate — here’s a look at three who could top the scoring charts.

1. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh is set to lead Australia in the upcoming ODI series, a task that comes with added responsibility due to the absence of several senior players. However, the all-rounder’s current form in white-ball cricket makes him one of the most dependable names in the squad.

In the recent home series against South Africa, Marsh showcased his class, scoring 206 runs in three matches at an average of 68.66, including a century and a fifty. His consistency continued during the T20I series in New Zealand, where he was the top scorer with 197 runs in three innings at a staggering strike rate of 191.26.

Marsh’s brilliance also extended to the IPL earlier this year, where he amassed 627 runs from 13 games at an impressive average of 48.23, hitting one century and six fifties.

2. Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has made his comeback to international cricket after the 2025 Champions Trophy and will serve as Shubman Gill’s deputy for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The stylish right-hander has been in exceptional form this year, especially in limited-overs cricket.

He played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, finishing as the team’s top run-getter with 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, including two crucial fifties. His form carried over into the IPL, where he remained a consistent performer.

Representing his franchise, Iyer scored 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07, smashing six half-centuries. He also impressed against Australia A, scoring 180 runs in three games with a century and a fifty.

3. Shubman Gill

India’s newly appointed ODI captain, Shubman Gill, has been in stunning form in red-ball cricket lately. He dominated the England series with 754 runs, including four centuries, and followed it up with 192 runs against the West Indies, featuring a hundred and a fifty.

Gill will look to extend his fine run into the ODI series against Australia. The young opener has been consistent in the format throughout 2025, scoring 447 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 63.85, with two centuries and two half-centuries.

ODI cricket remains Gill’s strongest suit. In his 55-match career so far, he has racked up 2,775 runs at an average of 59.04, including eight hundreds and 15 fifties.

With the T20 World Cup coming and the ODI World Cup a while away normallly the ODI format does take a back seat. However, the arrival of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma gives the ODIs a lot more hype. They could be potentially playing their final games in Australia. Both teams come in with decent line-ups, Australia missing some key players and their captain to injury.

Every sportsperson has their own way to stay match ready. Team India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has his own way to prepare himself for every match. Not only for matches, Yadav has developed himself as a better human being. Ahead of the India vs Australia (IND vs AUS) series, in a recent interview, the swashbuckling batter talked about how he is influenced by his mother and how he prepares himself for games.

The 35-year-old said that his mother is a very religious person, who explained why Hanuman Chalisa is important for him as well. Hanuman Chalisa is now Suryakumar's daily life. From morning to before a match, he keeps listening to the mantra to stay relaxed.

"I love to hear it every morning after the shower—10 or 15 minutes I am with myself; it calms me down. If I am in a rush, I put it in my car. My mother is very religious, and she says that Hanuman ji needed to remind himself of his strength, so if you listen to it, you will also be reminded of what you can do. So on game day I keep listening to it, and I feel relaxed. It’s become a routine," Yadav said ahead of the India vs. Australia white ball series.

Suryakumar Yadav revealed his daily life mantra

Team India is now in Australia for an 8-match limited overs series. The series is scheduled to start on October 19 with a three-match One Day International clash. After that, the Men in Blue brigade will face the home team for a 5-match T20I series. Suryakumar Yadav will take part in the Twenty20 format series as the captain of team India.

Only a few days ago, under Yadav's leadership, India won the Asia Cup 2025, defeating their archrivalPakistan in the final. India played dominantly in the series and remained unbeaten throughout the competition. Facing Australia in their homeland can be more challenging for the Suryakumar Yadav-led team.

The long wait for cricket fans has finally ended as Virat Kohli has returned to India after a four-month break, just in time for the upcoming series against Australia. His comeback has reignited excitement among supporters across the country.

Kohli was seen training intensely at the Optus Stadium in Perth, preparing himself for the big games ahead. From long batting sessions to focused fielding drills, the star batter looked determined to get back into rhythm before the series begins.

Despite the rigorous practice routine, Kohli’s trademark energy and enthusiasm remained unchanged. He was spotted sharing light moments and laughter with his teammates and support staff, showcasing the same lively spirit that has defined him throughout his career. His return not only boosts India’s lineup but also brings back the spark fans had been waiting for.

The Entertainer Kohli is Back:

Virat Kohli is not just admired for his exceptional batting but also for his lively presence on the field. The “King” is back, bringing both energy and entertainment. During practice sessions in Australia, Kohli was seen joking around and engaging with teammates, adding his trademark enthusiasm while maintaining his intense training routine.

The BCCI released the first official high-quality video on Friday (October 17), featuring Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s return to training in Perth ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia. The footage captured the duo walking onto the field, batting in the nets, and engaging in fielding drills.

It ended with heartwarming moments as they interacted with fans and signed autographs. This marked Kohli and Rohit’s first practice session with the Indian team since the 2025 Champions Trophy, following their retirement from Test cricket earlier this year and T20Is after lifting the World Cup.

As per ESPNcricinfo, Virat Kohli spent about 40 minutes batting in the nets, facing Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and local bowlers on a lively Perth pitch. Despite being challenged by a few short deliveries, he appeared calm and confident, consistently timing the ball well and finding the middle of the bat with ease.

After a great run in T20Is and Tests, Team India will try to keep their good form in ODIs when they face Australia in a three-match series down under. The first ODI will be played in Perth on Sunday, October 19.

This is the first ODI series between the two teams since the 2023 World Cup, and both sides are looking ahead to the 2027 World Cup. Most of the talk before the series is about the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Indian team.

However, there is not much debate about India’s batting order. The main question is about the fast bowlers. India have to choose between Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna. Since the first ODI is in Perth, India will likely play three pacers. Siraj and Arshdeep are almost sure to be picked, which leaves one spot between Harshit and Prasidh.

Here, we look at the key points that could help India decide who to pick between Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna for the first ODI against Australia.

1. Current Form

There is little difference between Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna in their current ODI form. Harshit made his India debut this year and was part of the 2025 Champions Trophy-winning team. Harshit has 10 wickets in five ODIs at an average of 20.70 and an economy of 5.69. Prasidh last played an ODI in the India-Australia series in 2023. However, Prasidh impressed in his last Test in England, taking eight wickets in two innings. He also has 29 wickets in 17 ODIs at an average of 25.58. Harshit played two 50-over games against Australia A for India A, taking three wickets at an average under 26. Prasidh had a better IPL 2025, with 25 wickets at an economy of 8.27, while Harshit took 15 wickets at over 10 economy.

Edge: Tie

2. Selection by Hierarchy

Close calls often depend on the pecking order. Harshit has played in the recent ODI Champions Trophy, taking four wickets in two matches at an average of 15.25 and an economy under four. Prasidh has not played an ODI in over two years. Both have limited Test experience in Australia, but Harshit has played one Test in Perth, which could help him adapt better.

Edge: Harshit Rana

3. Better Fit

India may play all three all-rounders, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, at Nos. 6–8. This leaves three spots for specialist bowlers. If Kuldeep Yadav is included as a spinner, either Harshit or Prasidh may miss out. Neither is a specialist with the new ball, but Prasidh is a better death bowler. However, Harshit is a better lower-order hitter. His first-class batting average is 31.18, compared to Prasidh’s 8.91. This makes him a better fit if India plays Kuldeep and three pacers.

Edge: Harshit Rana

Conclusion

Harshit Rana’s recent selections in the ODI squad favor him over Prasidh Krishna. While Prasidh is in good form and offers versatility, Harshit’s batting ability allows India more team combinations in Perth.

Verdict: Team India should pick Harshit Rana over Prasidh Krishna for the first ODI against Australia.

On paper, India’s men’s team will play three ODIs against Australia from October 19. These matches are important to check how both teams are preparing and what more they need to improve for the 2027 World Cup. However, in India, this series is mostly about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gautam Gambhir.

The two former ODI captains and the current head coach have been in the news for the past two months, even though they have hardly been on the field together. Now, as India started their first practice session in Perth, a video of Rohit Sharma talking with Gautam Gambhir has gone viral on social media.

Rohit-Gambhir Chat Creates Buzz Before Australia Series

The clip is from Star Sports on X (formerly Twitter). It shows a short moment of Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir talking before Rohit moves to the nets. Since then, fans of the Mumbaikar can’t stop talking about it. Watch it here:

Rohit looked in good touch during the nets. He is returning to competitive cricket after a few months and has only a few days to get ready before playing on one of the fastest pitches in the world. Reports say Rohit and Gambhir had a long chat on the sidelines before he started batting in the nets.

Publicly, both Gambhir and new captain Shubman Gill are saying similar things about Rohit and Kohli. They praised their experience but also said that both need to perform well in the Australia series.

Gambhir said after the recent Delhi Test against the West Indies, “The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is very important to stay in the present. They are quality players, and their experience will be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, both will have a successful tour.”

Gill also said, “They have been playing for India for 10–15 years and winning matches for us. The experience they bring is what every captain and team wants. We just want them to go out there and show their magic.”
