IND vs WI 2026]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/india-s-top-5-highest-successful-run-chases-in-t20-world-cup-history-ft-ind-vs-wi-2026/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-stats/india-s-top-5-highest-successful-run-chases-in-t20-world-cup-history-ft-ind-vs-wi-2026/ Mon, 02 Mar 2026 18:30:16 GMT

Team India booked their place in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a composed and memorable run chase against West Indies in their final Super 8 clash at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 1. The five-wicket victory confirmed their knockout spot, where they will meet England at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on March 5.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav made a courageous call to field first in what was a virtual knockout contest. West Indies recovered from a slow start and produced a strong finish, pushing their total close to the 200-run mark and setting up a stiff challenge.

Historically, India have not chased many big totals in T20 World Cup matches, having crossed the 150-run mark successfully only a few times before. However, the team displayed calmness, depth, and match awareness to script one of their finest chases in the tournament’s history.

With that remarkable effort, here’s a look at India’s top five highest successful run chases in T20 World Cup history.

India’s Top 5 Highest Successful Run Chases in T20 World Cup History

1) 196 vs West Indies – T20 World Cup 2026, Eden Gardens, Kolkata

India pulled off a massive chase of 196 in a virtual knockout against the Shai Hope-led West Indies side. The team was under heavy pressure, but Sanju Samson played a brilliant knock of 97 runs from 50 balls. His innings guided India to one of the highest successful chases in T20 World Cup history and sealed a place in the semi-final.

Wickets kept falling at the other end, which made the chase tense. However, Samson stayed calm and controlled the innings well. India reached the target with four balls to spare. This also became India’s ninth-highest successful run chase in T20Is.

2) 174 vs South Africa – T20 World Cup 2014 Semi-final, Dhaka

In the 2014 semi-final, India faced a strong South Africa side at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka. The MS Dhoni-led team had a tough target in a knockout game. Virat Kohli once again rose to the occasion with a match-winning effort.

Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane gave India a quick start. After that, Kohli took charge and handled the middle overs smartly. Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh added useful runs. Kohli stayed unbeaten on 72 off 44 balls and finished the match with a boundary off Dale Steyn. India reached the target with five balls left.

3) 161 vs Australia – T20 World Cup 2016, Mohali

During the 2016 T20 World Cup at home, India needed a win against Australia to qualify for the semi-finals. Australia scored 160 in the virtual knockout match.

India were in trouble at 94-4 after 14 overs and were close to elimination. Then Virat Kohli played one of the finest T20I innings. He took smart risks and ran hard between the wickets. With support from MS Dhoni, he guided India to victory with five balls to spare and kept their campaign alive.

4) 160 vs Pakistan – T20 World Cup 2022, Melbourne

India began their 2022 campaign against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

India began their 2022 campaign against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Pakistan posted 159-8 on a difficult pitch.

India struggled early and were reduced to 31-4 against the pace attack of Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Afridi. Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya rebuilt the innings with patience. Kohli later hit two stunning sixes off Haris Rauf, which changed the game.

The final over was full of drama against Mohammad Nawaz. With scores level on the last ball, R Ashwin stayed calm and hit the winning runs. It was one of India’s most famous wins in T20 World Cup history.

5) 139 vs Bangladesh – T20 World Cup 2014, Dhaka

India chased 139 against Bangladesh in the 2014 edition at Dhaka. The pitch was slow, but the dew helped the batting side later in the match.

Shikhar Dhawan fell early, but Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli scored half-centuries and added a 100-run partnership. Rohit got out in the 16th over, but Kohli stayed till the end. With a small cameo from MS Dhoni, India reached the target with nine balls remaining.

When Australiaposted a massive score of over 400 runs on the board during the third ODI of the three-match series against India at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, India always had a stiff task in their hand to go for a run rate of over eight from the beginning of the innings, and that too for 300 balls, which would have been an extra-ordinary performance.

India didn’t get a great start, losing their in-form opening batter, Smriti Mandhana, for a four-ball duck. Her first delivery was defended back to the bowler as the home side went with the attacking mode, keeping the slip in place. After being driven to cover on the second ball and punched to the right of the mid-off region on the third delivery, Carey came up with a different plan.

Mandhana tried to be too aggressive and perished. It was an out-swinging delivery from Nicola Carey on a fullish length, as Mandhana walked down the surface to swing across the line, and the ball lobbed up in the air off the leading edge, where Asleigh Gardner completed an easy catch.

Smriti Mandhana dismissed for duck in AUS-W vs IND-W Hobart ODI

Earlier in the game, Australia posted a massive score of 409 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Their captain, playing in her farewell ODI innings, Alyssa Healy, ended up with a firing knock of 158 runs in just 98 balls with the help of 27 boundaries and two sixes at a strike rate of 161.22.

Watch the video here:

Meanwhile, Australia got another massive contribution from their wicket-keeper batter, Beth Mooney, who bashed an unbeaten 106 runs in just 84 balls with the help of 10 boundaries and one six at a strike rate of 126.19.

India found themselves under pressure as they kept losing wickets regularly. Only one of their batters, Jemimah Rodrigues, crossed the 40-run mark, while the other failed to get themselves to a strong individual score with the bat.

Brief Scores: AUS-W 409/7 (Alyssa Healy 158, Beth Mooney 106*, Sneh Rana 2/66) vs IND-W 198/7 (Jemimah Rodrigues 42, Alana King 3/28)

“Sports don’t care about your feelings. It’s a harsh truth. But it doesn’t. It doesn’t care if you are tired. If you have just won. If you are the best player. If you are the newest player. If you are the most confident, the most nervous, or the hardest working. None of it. It only cares about one thing. How do you play the game?” Mandhana expressed in an Instagram story.

Smriti Mandhana shares stunning Instagram story

Mandhana’s life hasn’t gone smoothly after her relationship and wedding with Palash Muchhal ended shockingly last year. Mandhana, despite that, has held her shape with the bat and celebrated several records for the team she has been part of.

“How you show up. The intentions are to be the best you can be on that day. And if, only if, you give it your all, you give it your full attention and respect, you might be able to come away with a chance of success. And you get a chance to do it again. Which I think that’s one hell of a feeling.” Mandhana addressed.

“It was good to contribute to the series win. I think beating Australia in Australia is something really special. I'm really happy for the team and glad that I could contribute. Jemi is coming in and making me run all those twos, but yeah, I think it's a really good partnership between Jemi and me.” The 29-year-old concluded.

The series decider of the three-match T20I series between Australia Women and India Women will take place on Saturday, February 21, at the Adelaide Oval. The series is currently tied 1-1, with Australia winning the second T20I. This three-match T20I series between Australia Women and India Women is critical for both teams as they prepare for the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in the summer. Australia intends to recover from its previous semi-final loss, while Team India failed to advance beyond the group stage. The Indian team, led by veteran skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, won the first T20I using the DLS method, chasing a modest total of 134. But Australia was not about to give up easily, and they fought back in the second match to level the series at 1-1 heading into the third World Twenty20 International. Australiahas announced its 15-member squads for the ODI, T20I, and Test series against the touring Indian side, as Sophie Molineux has been named as the full-time successor to Alyssa Healy for the all-format captaincy and will lead for the first time in the T20I portion of the upcoming multi-format home series against India. She has elevated the all-format vice-captain, Tahila McGrath, while Asleigh Gardner has been named vice-captain.

Sophie Molineux, the 28-year-old spinner, is a left-field choice, having not played either T20I or Test cricket since 2024 due to her latest knee injury, and was managed through last year’s ODI World Cup. She also didn’t participate in the WBBL for the Melbourne Renegades.

“It's a real honour to be named Australian captain and something I'm incredibly proud of, especially following on from Alyssa, who's had such a huge impact on this team and the game. We've got a really strong group with plenty of natural leaders, alongside a lot of exciting talent coming through, and I'm really looking forward to working together as we keep evolving.” Molineux expressed.

Molineux will take charge of all three formats on the multi-format tour of the Australia side in the Caribbean, which includes Tests, before preparing for the T20 World Cup 2026 in England in June. National selector Shawn Fleglar addressed the spinner as the right choice for the position.

“We will continue to manage Sophie's workload, prioritizing key tournaments and major international series following injury challenges in recent seasons. Tahlia McGrath remains vice-captain, recognizing her significant leadership contribution under Alyssa Healy. Tahlia has acted as stand-in captain on 16 occasions across formats, providing consistency and stability.” Flegler said.

The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, during his recent speech at the Masters Gurgaon, spoke about what happened after India’s defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against Australia. That was perhaps one of the saddest days for all the players and the fans in this country.

India went into the final with an unbeaten record in the entire tournament before losing the plot to Australia in the final. From losing Shubman Gill at the start to Rohit Sharma's unfortunate dismissal to the last wicket, India did not get enough runs on the board.

“Everybody was extremely disappointed, and we just couldn’t believe what had happened. It was a very tough time for me personally because I had put everything into that World Cup, not just two or three months before it, but ever since I took over the captaincy in 2022.Rohit expressed in the speech.

Rohit Sharma recalls ODI World Cup 2023 defeat against Australia

India picked three early wickets for 47 runs of the Australian side during the second innings. They perhaps smelled the victory. But that was when Travis had smashed a splendid century to complete the chase and make the tournament their name.

Watch the video here:

“My only goal was to win the World Cup, whether it was the T20 World Cup or the 2023 World Cup. So when it didn’t happen, I was completely devastated. There was no energy left in my body. It took me a couple of months to recover and bring myself back. I guess when you invest so much into something and don’t achieve the result, it’s a very natural reaction. Rohit recalled.

That’s exactly what happened with me. But I also knew that life doesn’t end there. It was a big lesson for me on how to deal with disappointment, reset, and start fresh. I knew that something else was coming at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, and I had to shift all my focus towards that. The Nagpur-born addressed.

November 19, 2023—the date haunts the Indian cricket fans to date. It was the day when millions of dreams had shattered. India reached the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 as the undefeated team, only a step away from lifting the grand trophy. Indian cricket fans had prepared for a grand celebration. But that did not take place. Australia won the final; Australia won the 2023 World Cup by defeating India.

End of a memorable campaign on a harsh note for Men in Blue. The picture of broken Rohit Sharma, then the captain of India, and Virat Kohli was enough to tell the whole story—a story without a happy ending. Now in 2025, two years after the heartbreaking night, cricket fans still can recall the moment. Countless statuses, posts, videos, and photos have been surfacing on social media platforms from midnight in memory of the day—November 19, 2023.

In the final of the 2023 World Cup, the batting line-up of India surprisingly misfired. At the houseful Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, could score only 240 runs, batting first. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul batted well. Sharma scored 47, Kohli scored 54, and Rahul scored 66. The 8 other players of the combination remained mostly silent. As a result, the Indian bundled for only 240 runs in the 50-over limit.

A memorable World Cup 2023 run ended in a harsh note

Mitchell Starc claimed the highest wickets for Australia in the match, 3 for him. A brace each for Josh Hazlewood and captain Pat Cummins. The target of 241 was still competitive, but the Australian batting lineup was too good to achieve the mark, especially when Travis Head was in tremendous form. Head walked into the pitch and registered a match-winning, historic century—137 off 120. Marnus Labuschagne, the middle-order batter who remained unbeaten till the end of the match, ensured the title for Australia with 58* off 110-run innings.

Australia needed only 43 overs to wrap up the match and conclude the tournament. In exchange for only 4 wickets, team Australia chased down the target. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, who were in brilliant form throughout the tournament, could do very little against the Aussies. Australia, as the deserving team, won the World Cup 2023 final.

After the 2011 World Cup triumph, Indian cricket fans are still waiting for the moment. 2023 could be the high point, but that did not happen. For now, the countless videos with the background song, "Khada hu aaj bhi wahi...".
