Top 5 Memorable Test matches played at the Gabba

1. 2021, 4th Test: India won by three wickets

The 2021 Indian-Australian showdown at the Gabba was a spectacular, historic match that provided thrilling cricketing entertainment. Australia won the toss and batted first, scoring 369 runs in the opening innings. India responded by scoring 336 runs, with Shardul Thakur leading the way with 67. Consequently, the Aussies were knocked out for 294, setting India a target of 328.

India exhibited incredible resilience. Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara laid a good foundation, while Rishabh Pant's aggressive performance enhanced India's prospects. Pant's unbeaten 89 runs led India to a historic three-wicket victory on the last day. India won their first and only test match at the Gabba, snapping Australia's 32-year unbeaten streak there.

2. 2003, 1st Test: Match Drawn

The 2003 Gabba test represented the Indian cricket team's resilient attitude, with Sourav Ganguly at the forefront. Ganguly won the toss and told Australia to bat first. Rain affected play throughout the first three days. Justin Langer's 121 pushed the hosts to 323 in the first innings. However, when Jason Gillespie removed Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar in one over, India were 62/3 behind.

Ganguly then stepped out to the crease. Ganguly drove through the covers, cut through point, drew to mid-wicket, and flicked past mid-on, all with the finesse of a left-handed batter. With his 144-run knock, Ganguly led India from the front with the bat and sent a strong message to the Aussies that India would give a tough fight at that time.

3. 1947, 1st Test: Australia won by an innings and 226 runs

In this sub-part of the listicle, the Indian cricket team scored the lowest total ever at The Gabba in Test cricket. India was bowled out for 58 in their first innings after Australia produced 382/8d at Brisbane in 1947. Captain Lala Amarnath led India's scoring with 22 runs, while Chandu Sarwate who made 12 runs, was the only batter to reach double figures.

Ernie Toshack, a left-arm medium, was Australia's main wrecker, with 5/2 bowling stats. After Australia's enforced follow-on, the Indian side were bowled out for 98 in their second innings, and the hosts won the first Test by an innings and 226 runs. Sir Donald Bradman led Australia to a 4-0 victory in the five-match Test series.

4. 2014, 2nd Test: Australia won by four wickets

Though this match saw India having a forgettable loss, it also saw an evolution of one of the finest and underappreciated innings by a former top-order batter named Murli Vijay. A robust and vigilant innings would be a brief summation of the batter's 144 runs off 234 balls.

This made him the first opener to score a triple-digit figure in the first innings of a test match at The Gabba. He played shots all around the wicket: delicate glances, powerful drives - both in the air and along the ground - and one slashing cut shot over backward point. Though it didn't go in the way of the away side, it marks itself as one of the most underrated batters' remarkable innings.

5. 1968, 3rd Test: Australia won by 39 runs

The 1968 Test clash at the Gabba was an all-you-can-eat buffet of an intense and intriguing red-ball game. With India winning the toss and choosing to field first, they had a taste of the challenging Brisbane conditions, with Australia making 397 runs in their first innings. But they gave a formidable reply by making 355 runs in the away side's first innings. After the down-unders' second innings of 294, India was given a target of 395 on a challenging last-few days track of the Gabba.

Then came the USP of the match, former Indian batter ML Jaisimha, a stylish player from Hyderabad, became the first from his country to smash a Test century at Gabba in Brisbane, as he made 101 runs off 291 balls. Even after a stellar innings, India were short by just a mere 39 runs.
