T20 World Cup 2026: Points table, most runs, most wickets

Sri Lanka delivered a dominant all-round performance to outclass Australia by eight wickets, comfortably chasing 182 in their T20 World Cup 2026 match. After winning the toss, Australia got off to a quick start with a partnership of 70 in their Powerplay as Marsh and Head put the Sri Lankan bowlers under pressure with an aggressive batting approach. They put on a 100-run opening stand and looked like they would post a very large total. However, once they lost their first wicket, they had no momentum and lost wickets at regular intervals when it was time to score runs, and ultimately Australia had only 181 runs when they were all out, which was not enough runs for them to win.

The aggressive nature of the Australian batting at the beginning of their innings allowed them to score a considerable number of boundaries against both medium-fast and spin-bowling, with Marsh scoring eight boundaries (four 4’s and two 6’s) and Head also scoring all his boundaries in a similar way. They were able to do this because the Sri Lankan team did not bowl with the necessary control and variation, particularly due to Dushan Hemantha’s three-wicket performance that shifted momentum back to them. Dushmantha Chameera and Dunith Wellalage were also involved by also removing some key middle-order batsmen. Once they lost regular wickets, the Australian batting line-up collapsed and they lost their last seven wickets quickly. However, despite getting off to such a great start with their aggressive style of batting they could have continued their momentum by scoring at a similar pace to make their total 200, or more, until they put on minimal pressure on the Sri Lankan team to perform to win the match.

Chasing 182, Pathum Nissanka produced a magnificent innings that deflated Australia’s hopes. After Kusal Perera fell early, he forged a superb partnership with Kusal Mendis, blending elegance with controlled aggression. Boundaries arrived frequently as fielders were pushed back and bowlers searched for answers. Nissanka’s timing and placement kept Sri Lanka ahead of the rate throughout, and when Mendis departed, the result was nearly certain, leaving the rest to finish the job calmly with ease.
