New Zealand registered a convincing win over Afghanistan in Match 4 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Chennai, producing a dominant performance in a high-scoring encounter. Afghanistan, batting first, posted a competitive 182 for 6, anchored by a fluent 63 off 35 balls from Gulbadin Naib. He paced his innings well and kept the scoreboard moving throughout. Late contributions from Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, and Darwish Rasooli helped Afghanistan finish strongly, despite New Zealand maintaining control through disciplined bowling across most phases.

Among New Zealand’s bowlers, Mitchell Santner stood out with an economical spell, conceding just 23 runs from his four overs and applying consistent pressure. Matt Henry also chipped in effectively with figures of 1 for 27. In response, New Zealand began their chase at a brisk pace before Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck twice in quick succession to momentarily halt their momentum. Those breakthroughs briefly tilted the balance, but Afghanistan were unable to fully capitalise as New Zealand regrouped calmly through the middle overs.

Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips then stitched together a composed partnership that brought stability and control back into the chase. Rotating strike efficiently, they gradually increased the tempo to neutralise Afghanistan’s spin threat and keep the required rate manageable. The finishing duties were handled by Daryl Mitchell and Santner, who added crucial late runs. Mitchell smashed 25 off 14 balls, while Santner contributed 28 off 17. Rashid Khan endured an expensive outing, as New Zealand sealed victory with five wickets in hand and 13 balls remaining.
