New Zealand registered a dominant eight-wicket win over Canada in their Group D meeting at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, comfortably chasing 174. After being sent in to bat, Canada finished their innings on 173 for 4, thanks in large part on the back of Yuvraj Samra's brilliant century. His 110 runs came off just 65 balls and were made up of many boundaries and sixes and built the momentum through the innings to give Canada a complete innings despite starting off on the slower side. Although there were only a few people contributing runs to provide support to Yuvraj Samra, the partnerships he formed created constant pressure on the New Zealand team by adding runs to the scoreboard and allowing Canada to have a reasonable chance of defending their total against a strong New Zealand batting order.

New Zealand's chase got off to a shaky start when two early wickets fell in the first 4 overs and gave the Canadian team a boost of confidence. Rachin Ravindra was able to stabilize the innings by rotating the strike with solid running as he gained comfort at the crease, before accelerating the pace of his innings. He was joined by Glenn Phillips, who changed the pace of the game from at a much faster rate by attacking the bowlers and hitting the ball over the boundary and forcing changes to the fielding positions. As the two batters added to the total at a rapid rate through their solid partnership, the scoreboard pressure was taken away from them as boundaries were obtained regularly, and the necessary run rate continued to decrease. As a result, Canada was unable to make any inroads or stop the scoring from both batters.

Earlier, Canada’s effort revolved entirely around Samra’s brilliance, as he controlled partnerships and managed strike expertly. Captain Dilpreet Bajwa added stability with a patient 36 to steady the middle phase, while late contributions from Navneet Dhaliwal and Dilon Heyliger lifted the total past 170. Although New Zealand’s bowlers produced tidy spells, none could restrict Samra’s scoring range. His dismissal in the final over reduced late acceleration slightly, yet the innings still appeared competitive. Ultimately, Phillips’ finish highlighted the difference between the sides and confirmed New Zealand’s superiority with the bat.
