Former England cricketer Mark Ramprakash has heaped praise on India’s young captain, Shubman Gill, for his exceptional form and leadership in the ongoing Test series against England. In his column for The Guardian, Ramprakash lauded Gill’s stamina, technique, and hunger, stating that the 25-year-old is proving himself to be a worthy successor to the ‘Fab Four’ of modern cricket—Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson—whose dominance may be nearing its end.

Gill has amassed a remarkable 585 runs in just two Tests, scoring 269 and 161 in the Edgbaston Test after earlier registering 147 in the series opener at Leeds. Ramprakash emphasized that Gill isn’t just scoring heavily but also leading by example as the new captain of a youthful Indian team.
“We have to pay testament to his stamina, his skill, and his hunger—not just for runs, but to set an example as the new captain of a young team,” he wrote.

Highlighting Gill’s elegant and classical style, Ramprakash noted the young batter’s ability to seamlessly transition across formats while maintaining a solid technical base.
“Gill has shown he can fill those boots and in a wonderfully orthodox style: he plays all formats and is brilliantly adaptable, but with a foundation of classic technique,” he added. According to Ramprakash, rather than burdening him, the captaincy has sharpened Gill’s focus—as evidenced by his three highest Test scores coming within the last three weeks.

Dominance That Defined a Test Match

The 55-year-old former England batter underlined how rare it is for an individual performance to define an entire match the way Gill’s double ton did at Edgbaston. “Two games into the series, we have already witnessed something very special from Shubman Gill… In the second Test at Edgbaston, he produced a real rarity: an individual performance that defines and dominates a game,” Ramprakash wrote.

Gill became the first Indian and Asian captain to score a double century in a Test in England and only the second Indian after Sunil Gavaskar to record both a double century and a century in the same Test. His innings helped set up a crushing 336-run victory for India, leveling the five-match series 1–1. Ramprakash credited Gill’s unrelenting approach for wearing down England, stating, “It was Gill's remorselessness that created the conditions” for India’s new-ball bowlers to reduce England to 25 for three at the end of Day 2—a decisive moment in the match.

The third Test will begin on July 10 at Lord’s, where all eyes will again be on the in-form Indian skipper.
