Super 4 Qualification Scenarios

Afghanistan made things harder for themselves after losing to Bangladesh in a key Group B match in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, September 16. Sri Lanka already had four points, making the “group of death” even more exciting. Bangladesh showed they are serious about claiming the second spot in the Super Fours, with their bowlers working together to stop Afghanistan from chasing 155 in 20 overs.

Asia Cup 2025 – Group B: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka Super Fours Qualification Scenarios

At one point, Tanzid Tamim was batting very well, and Bangladesh looked set to score over 170, maybe even 180. Afghanistan fought back in the second half of the innings, keeping the target to a manageable 154. Noor Ahmad and captain Rashid Khan bowled strongly, and Azmatullah Omarzai gave Afghanistan a late boost with a quick 3. However, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed finished the game brilliantly, preventing Afghanistan from reaching the target.

TeamQualification Scenarios
Bangladesh- Qualify if Sri Lanka beats Afghanistan by any margin.- Can also qualify if Afghanistan loses badly:  • By 70+ runs  • If Afghanistan fails to chase the target in 50+ balls
Afghanistan- Qualify if they beat Sri Lanka in their final league match.- Net run rate will decide if victory margins are small
Sri Lanka- Qualify if they beat Afghanistan by any margin.- Must not lose by 70+ runs- Must not allow Afghanistan to chase the target in ≤50 balls (12.2 overs)

Despite the loss, Afghanistan still has control of their fate. Thanks to a big 94-run win over Hong Kong in their first match, they have the best net run rate in Group B. Winning their next game should be enough for them to reach the Super Fours.

For Bangladesh, the situation is more complicated. They are the only team in the mix with a negative net run rate. Their best chance to qualify is if Sri Lanka beats Afghanistan on Thursday. If Afghanistan wins, Bangladesh would need major help Sri Lanka would have to lose by at least 71 runs (if batting first) or with 53 or more balls left (if chasing). Any smaller loss, and Bangladesh will miss out.

It is shaping up to be a thrilling finish in Group B, with all three teams still in the running. From Group A, India has already qualified, and either Pakistan or UAE will join them after today’s match.
