Just 15 minutes before the start of the second day of the fifth Test between England and India at the Kennington Oval, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement stating that they had released the update of leaving out their premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, from the squad for the series. The pacer is now free to go home and won’t take any further part in the contest.

After the end of the fourth Test between the two sides, where the tourists drew the game at Old Trafford in Manchester, having batted for five sessions, their head coach, Gautam Gambhir, revealed that all of their bowlers were fit and ready to be considered for the final. Even on the eve of the encounter, captain Shubman Gill shed light on the same. But the management didn’t pick the pacer for the series decider.

Bumrah finished the series with 14 wickets in three games at an average of 26, having gone through the workload of 119.4 overs over six weeks. As the message from the team came before the series, the Ahmedabad-born played three Tests in the series at Leeds, Lord’s, and Old Trafford. India drew one and lost two of those.

‘It’s a complex decision. He’s not hiding; we’re managing him. He told us he’d play three Tests and left it to us to decide which ones. His workload has been high, even if it doesn’t look like that on paper. We just didn’t think this was the game to push him.’ India’s assistant coach, Ryan Ten Doeschate, expressed at the end of the first day in the press conference.

Bumrah can now take a break for nearly two months before taking part in the Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is expected to later fly to Australia for the white-ball series, but he could get another break during the home Test series against the West Indies.
