There’s something special about a cricketer who lets his game do the talking. On June 28, South Africa quietly introduced a new name into Test cricket — Codi Yusuf, a 27-year-old pacer who has spent years grinding through domestic circuits. On debut against Zimbabwe, Yusuf grabbed three wickets in 14 well-controlled overs, removing key batters like Takudzwanashe Kaitano, Nick Welch, and veteran Wellington Masakadza. Two came via edges to the keeper, a pacer’s reward for precision and patience.

What makes this moment sweeter is everything that came before it. Yusuf isn’t a social media sensation. He didn’t burst onto the scene overnight. He’s a product of hard work and consistency someone who has quietly taken over 100 first-class wickets, built his name with the Lions and Gauteng, and earned the respect of legends. In fact, Dale Steyn himself praised Yusuf for his performance against England Lions last year  and when Steyn speaks about a young fast bowler, people listen.

Born in Knysna in 1998, Yusuf took the longer road to reach the top. He debuted in T20s back in 2018, playing against Kenya in the Africa T20 Cup  not even a recognized international game, but still a stepping stone. Today, he wears the South African Test cap, proving that paths to success don’t have to be loud, just honest. He also features in South Africa’s SA20 league with the Paarl Royals, the sister franchise of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, gaining exposure at the highest T20 level.
