Court orders Shikhar Dhawan's Ex-Wife to return ₹5.7 Crore from divorce amid his second marriage with Sophie Shine

A few days after his second marriage, Shikhar Dhawan received a significant legal relief from a Delhi court. The Patiala House Court directed his former wife, Aesha Mukerji, to repay ₹5.7 crore after declaring their earlier financial settlements legally invalid. Dhawan and Mukerji were married in 2012 and separated in 2021. They share a son, Zorawar, who was born in 2014.

As reported by Bar & Bench, the court observed that the financial agreements were executed under circumstances involving pressure, coercion, and misrepresentation. On this basis, the court ordered Mukerji to return approximately AU$894,397 (around ₹5.7 crore), which she had received as part of an interim arrangement following the sale of a property in Australia.

In addition, the court directed that interest at the rate of 9 percent per annum be paid on the amount from the date Dhawan initiated legal proceedings. The court further held that the earlier settlement approved by an Australian court was unenforceable in India, stating that the foreign court did not have proper jurisdiction over the matrimonial dispute between the parties.

Dhawan Challenges Australian Court Orders in Divorce Case

In his divorce case, Shikhar Dhawan told the court that soon after their 2012 marriage, his former wife Aesha Mukerji began threatening him. He alleged that she warned she would circulate fabricated and defamatory material to harm his reputation and cricket career.

The Former Indian opener said that he bought several properties using his own money. However, he claimed that he was forced to register them in joint names. In one case, Mukerji was listed as 99 percent owner of a property that he had purchased.

Between 2021 and 2024, an Australian court passed several orders regarding the division of their assets. Dhawan argued that the financial calculations made by the Australian court were not in line with the Hindu Marriage Act and Indian law. He requested the Indian court to declare that he was not bound by the foreign court’s orders.

After hearing both sides, the Patiala House Court accepted Dhawan’s arguments. The court ruled that he is not bound by the orders passed by the Australian court.

Divorce and Custody Battle

In 2023, a Delhi court granted a divorce to the couple. The court noted that Dhawan had suffered mental stress after being separated from his son, Zoravar, for a long time. It was observed that Mukerji did not properly contest or respond to these claims.

The Former PBKS batter was not given permanent custody of his son. However, he was granted visitation rights and permission for video calls in both India and Australia, where Mukerji lives. Later, Dhawan stated that he was blocked from communicating with his son.

Dhawan entered his second marriage with Sophie Shine in a private ceremony on February 22, 2025.
