ENG vs IND 2nd Test Day 4

  • IND: 587 and 427/6d
  • ENG: 407 and 72/3
  • England need 536 runs in 90 overs to win

Team India is leading the race in Edgbaston. They need 7 more wickets to take down the fortress of England. The host now needs 536 runs on the final day of the second Test to win the contest and maintain their momentum, as they won the first of the five-match series.

The team led by Ben Stokes, before the end of Day 4, lost their openers Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and number 4 batsman Joe Root. Like in the first innings, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj again shined with the new red ball. If England wants to win the match on Day 5 with 90 overs in hand, then they'll have to maintain a run rate of 5.95, almost 6.00, throughout the day, which seems far from difficult.

Ollie Pope and Harry Brook will start the day for England, with captain Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith—two credible batters—padded up in the dressing room. Duckett tried to apply the Bazball theory in the beginning of the second innings, which did not work out well. If they again take the same route, then India can find multiple opportunities to claim the rest of England's 7 scalps.

The amount of sudden impact Siraj and Akash Deep showed in the first innings was outstanding. Shubman Gill's India can push all out for a historic win in Birmingham. Without Gill's 161 runs against 162 balls, maintaining almost a hundred strike rate, India could not have gotten the 608-run lead. The captain's knock was well supported by KL Rahul's 55, Rishabh Pant's 65, and an unbeaten 69 from Ravindra Jadeja.

Key factors of Day 4:

  • Shubman Gill's 161
  • Huge lead by Team India
  • Early wickets by Siraj and Akash Deep
