West Indies and Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe and the West Indies are experiencing unexpected travel hitches after completing their T20 World Cup 2026 tournaments in India. Their return flights have been affected by the rising tensions between countries in the Middle East. Countries in the Gulf region have closed their airspace following military action between Iran, Israel, and the United States. Consequently, thousands of international flights have been canceled.

A number of players and officials were due to fly via major transit points such as Dubai International Airport. However, the shutdown of key air routes has made those plans impossible. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that it has activated contingency plans for staff and personnel. Travel and logistics teams are now working to arrange alternative routes through Europe, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Both West Indies and Zimbabwe confirmed on Monday that their departures from India had been postponed. While the on-field action of the T20 World Cup has concluded for them, their journey home remains uncertain. Security consultants are in constant touch with the authorities and keep them updated. For now, both teams are safe in India. West Indies are currently in Kolkata.

Boards Assure Safety as ICC Explores Alternate Routes

West Indies were knocked out of the tournament after losing to India by five wickets in their final Super Eight match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. They had earlier posted 195/4, with contributions from Roston Chase, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, and Rovman Powell. However, India chased down the target with strong knocks from Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. The Caribbean side is currently staying in Kolkata while awaiting travel clearance.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) issued an official statement to address concerns. “The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials remain our highest priority,” CWI said. The board also added, “These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf Region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons.” CWI confirmed it is working closely with the ICC, government authorities, and airline partners to arrange new travel plans.

Zimbabwe, who were eliminated after losing all three Super Eight matches including their final game against South Africa in New Delhi, were also set to fly home via Dubai. Zimbabwe Cricket reassured supporters by posting, “The Zimbabwe men’s team remains safe and well in India... the squad was scheduled to return home via Dubai.” Although the Middle East crisis has not directly impacted the tournament, it has created major travel challenges. Both teams remain safe as arrangements continue to be reviewed.
