India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav recently addressed the team’s bowling strategy, stressing that their plans are not centered on part-time options. However, he admitted that having batters who can bowl provides useful flexibility.

He noted that India’s strategy has evolved noticeably since Gautam Gambhir assumed the role of head coach. The team has shown greater willingness to trust non-regular bowlers during pressure situations.

Names like Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, and even Suryakumar himself have been handed the ball at times. This added dimension has strengthened India’s depth, ensuring the team can call on multiple contributors and create more balance in their bowling attack when the situation demands.

Suryakumar Yadav Showcases His Capability During Captaincy:

Suryakumar Yadav showcased his fearless captaincy during the Sri Lanka tour last year with some daring choices. When Sri Lanka required just nine runs off 12 balls with six wickets in hand, he handed the ball to Rinku Singh instead of using Mohammed Siraj.

The gamble paid off as Rinku conceded only three runs and dismissed two batters, turning the game around. With six needed in the final over, Surya took responsibility himself, delivering under immense pressure. He successfully pushed the contest into a super over, where India held their nerves and sealed a thrilling victory.

Indian Captain’s Witty Response in Press Conference:

Ahead of Asia Cup 2025, Suryakumar Yadav was asked about India’s reliance on part-time bowlers, referencing the Sri Lanka T20I. With a humorous reply, he remarked that Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka would likely prefer to forget that match, underlining how India’s unexpected bowling choices had a significant impact. He said, “ I'm sure he wants to forget that.”

His remark highlighted the impact of India’s unconventional bowling choices in that match, while also underlining the psychological edge such moments can provide going into a high-stakes tournament like the Asia Cup.

India’s skipper also shared his perspective on part-time bowlers, noting that they won’t form the team’s core strategy. However, he emphasized their importance, explaining that batters capable of delivering a few overs provide much-needed balance and tactical options, particularly on challenging or slower pitches where variation can make a big difference.

He further said, “ But no, we won't, we don't want to get to that extent. But yeah, it's an added advantage if any batter batting at top order or middle order gives you an extra over in this format.”

He added, “ It's always good for the captain and we might need—any, for example, if a surface is slow or we need a bowler who spins—so it's always good to have someone rolling their arms for one over or two. But yeah, it's always good to have someone like that in the pocket.”
