Rishabh Pant climbs to career-best spot, Shubman Gill back in top 20

The vice-captain Rishabh Pant and captain Shubman Gill have made big strides up the ICC Test batting rankings this week, after their performance in the first Test against England at Leeds. The 24-year-old Pant had a historic performance and became the first wicketkeeper in Test history from India to score centuries in both innings of a Test. He is also only the second wicketkeeper to do it, besides Andy Flower from Zimbabwe, with scores of 134 and 118. However, the twin tons were not helpful for India as India lost the first Test against England by 5 wickets.

Shubman Gill, who was captaining India in the Test format for the first time, had a great outing with the bat and led from the front with a well-composed 147 in the first innings. He was also India’s top scorer in the first innings. It was courtesy of a talismanic player's knock that laid the foundation for India’s innings. The right-hand batter also showed sheer maturity under pressure. On the other hand, England's opening batter Ben Duckett also had an incredible game, scoring 62 and 149 in the first and second innings, respectively. The left-hand batter reached a personal best in Test batting rankings, after climbing five places in the latest updated ranking.

England's Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith also moved up in the ICC Test rankings, now sitting at 19th and 27th respectively after strong performances in the first Test. Ben Stokes, England’s captain, showcased his all-round prowess by taking five wickets and contributing 53 runs, which helped him rise to fifth in the all-rounder rankings. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal maintained his fourth position in the batting rankings, and KL Rahul gained ten spots to reach 38th after his solid outing in the match.
