Punjab Kings (PBKS) have selected all-rounder Mitchell Owen as an injured replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been withdrawn from the rest of IPL 2025 with a broken finger.

Australian all-rounder Owen, who has played 34 T20s and has 646 runs to his name, two centuries, and a top score of 108, will be with PBKS for Rs 3 Crore. Owen has 10 wickets in T20s too.

Maxwell, who was retained for Rs 4.2 crore during the previous mega auction, had been poor with the bat this season, scoring only 48 runs in six matches and not going over double figures in his previous four games. He scored 0, 30, 1, 3, 7 and 7, his second poor season on the trot with the bat after scoring only 52 runs in nine matches in 2024.

PBKS affected by injuries, Recruit big bash star Mitchell Owen before decisive playoff encounter

He was a valuable option with the ball as well, taking four wickets off his offspin. The injury, though, has brought an end to his campaign. Maxwell's injury joined the second big name leaving PBKS setup, following Lockie Ferguson being ruled out for a serious injury. while that was happening, Owen, who remained unsold in the last season's mega auction, made it to Big Bash history on the biggest platform this January when he matched Craig Simmons' record for the quickest BBL hundred (108 off 42 with 11 sixes) to help the Hobart Hurricanes win their first title.

He followed up his BBL triumph with a breathtaking 149 off 69 balls for Tasmania in the One-Day Cup and franchises have begun calling with offers in the SA20 and PSL. With six victories from ten games, PBKS are placed fourth on the points table and in good shape to make a run for the playoffs. They face Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday night and a victory there can reaffirm their position among the top four with the league stage winding down.(Agency)
