Wanindu Hasaranga and Sandeep Sharma not playing today against Mumbai Indians

In a big blow to Rajasthan Royals (RR), two of their primary bowlers – Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Indian fast bowler Sandeep Sharma – have been left out of their Indian Premier League 2025 match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on Thursday, May 1. The highly crucial 50th match of the campaign is being played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, and RR will have to strive without two crucial cogs in the wheels of their bowling.

Skipper Riyan Parag announced the news at the toss, stating that Hasaranga has a niggle, while Sandeep Sharma has had a broken finger, keeping him out of business. These involuntary replacements have brought Kumar Kartikeya and Akash Madhwal into the XI.

RR Face Major Bowling Setback Against MI

Hasaranga, with his accurate leg-spin and variations, has been the RR's banker in middle overs, used to break partnerships and limit run rates. Without him, their spin asset is weakened, especially on a Jaipur pitch that favors slower bowlers. Sandeep Sharma has been their go-to new-ball and death-overs bowler, though. His experience, control, and swing have allowed RR to get pressure in powerplays and seal games nicely.

This double whammy of injuries comes at a key moment in the season, when teams are fighting for playoff spots. RR, who have already experienced a couple of patchy performances this season, will need their backups to step up to the plate soon. Youngster Riyan Parag, who has taken charge of the team now, will also have the responsibility of managing a revamped bowling unit against a potent MI batting line-up.

Although RR continue to have depth in their lineup, losing Sandeep and Hasaranga will have an immense effect on their bowling lineup and game equation. The followers will be keeping their fingers crossed that the fill-ins do not upset the momentum of the side at this time of the league.

The team's resilience will be put to the test now, and how well they adapt to being short on two of their star bowlers might just seal their fate in the IPL 2025 from here on in.
