The cricket fans experienced a great and memorable thriller in the crucial South Africa vs Afghanistan Group D match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 on Wednesday (February 11). Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn, who was in the commentary box, was amazed by the game.

An unforgettable game between South Africa and Afghanistan

Both South Africa and Afghanistan never gave up an inch without a fight till the last ball of the match. While South Africa scored 187/6 in 20 overs after batting first at Ahmedabad, Afghanistan were 187 all out. The first Super Over also ended in a tie, where Tristan Stubbs smashed a six on the final ball to force the match go to another Super Over.

While South Africa smashed 23 runs in the second Super Over, it was already to their favour, and it became clearer in the first two balls, where Afghanistan couldn't score a run and lost Mohammad Nabi's wicket. Afghanistan needed 24 runs in the last four balls, where Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed three consecutive sixes, and Keshav Maharaj delivered a wide to make the match more interesting with five runs in the last ball. Gurbaz was dismissed on the final ball, as South Africa finally managed to win the second Super Over to secure crucial two points.

The match was always moving here and there, as neither of the teams managed to dominate the game. Once one team was climbing to a better position, the other team managed to pull them down to move up.

Dale Steyn felt incredible to experience the game, which makes the game very special. He also clarified that even he couldn't control himself after experiencing this rare event.

"It's tough to put into words, to be honest with you. I think it was more a physical feeling that you had to be there. And I hope people enjoyed it watching it on TV, because what I felt was just raw energy throughout those last, what is it, 15, 20 minutes. Just incredible. The fact that South Africa should have won with that no-ball. And then there's probably a moment internally of disappointment and anger, to be honest with you. You try and remain as neutral as possible, obviously, as a commentator. But there's a moment where you just feel, wow, like You are supporting your country here. So you do want them to win. And then pure excitement as Noor Ahmad like, bangs the six and it starts to get a little bit closer. So the game is just like, it was just petering on the edge the entire time. I think they needed to score 10 runs and over pretty much from the get-go. And it's just tough. There were so many small moments to look back at the game and go, either team could have won it or there, but just thoroughly entertaining throughout. Yeah, pretty special to be there to watch it happen."
