Shubman Gill's preparation before Eng vs Ind Lord's Test.

Shubman Gill, the Indian Test captain, has found an incredible rhythm during the ongoing five-match series against England. Since landing in the United Kingdom, the right-handed batter has smashed 147 runs in the first innings of the opening Leeds Test before stretching his purple patch to Edgbaston with 269 in the first innings, followed by another 161 in the second.

But does that mean it was enough for the batter on the trip to spend time in the practice session? Absolutely not. After India’s dominating 336-run victory to level the series, the action turns to Lord’s for the blockbuster, and the batter will want to show the same flow. The challenge will be a bit more than the last two weeks, especially on a green and bouncy surface.

The Cricbuzz reporter, present at the ground, has given an inside story of how the Punjab-born batter prepared himself on the eve of the contest. When most thought he could have taken a day off having already been in superb form, Gill went into the nets at 2:15 in the afternoon and took 90 minutes before taking his helmet off.

Gill’s practice wasn’t limited to a certain net as he strolled to various places whenever he found a vacancy. At the start, he was on the second net where he paired up with Karun Nair, India’s number three from the Birmingham Test. The latter is going through a rough patch and could face an acid test in his red-ball career. This net was for the spinners, but before joining that, Gill called a throwdown person for a warm-up alone.

After facing Washington Sundar and two other off-spinners, the right-handed batter moved to the pacers’ net where he exchanged a few sessions with the opening batter, KL Rahul. He faced Deepak Chahar at first, who was in India’s practice session. After leaving and defending a few balls under his eyes, he started to nail the big shots. That’s the first 45 minutes. Later, he faced a few underarm deliveries from Ryan Ten Doeschate to reset the process.

Now, he padded up again and joined Rishabh Pant in a new net against the semi-new ball. Even after the wicket-keeper batter was done, Gill still kept facing the bowlers for another 10 minutes. From a scheduled one-net session, he joined four partners. After 430 runs in the previous fixture, his eyes are now set to pen down another history.
