The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has taken a special step to honour sports journalists who have covered cricket for decades. On March 4, the association unveiled a new Honours Board dedicated to journalists from past generations. The board features the names of 36 respected sports journalists. This initiative recognises their important role in documenting Mumbai’s cricket history.

The Honours Board has been placed inside the Balasaheb Thackeray Press Box at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The unveiling took place just a day before the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final between India and England scheduled at the venue. MCA President Ajinkya Naik officially inaugurated the board on Wednesday afternoon. The event highlighted the strong connection between cricket and journalism in Mumbai.

The association emphasised that cricket’s legacy is not only shaped by players but also by those who tell the story of the game. For many years, journalists have covered Mumbai cricket and shared its stories with fans. Their work has protected its rich history. The Mumbai Cricket Association believes they deserve recognition.

MCA Leaders Praise Journalists’ Contribution

Speaking about the initiative, Ajinkya Naik said, “Mumbai's cricketing legacy has been built not only by players on the field but also by journalists who have chronicled its journey with integrity and passion. The MCA deeply values its longstanding relationship with the city's sports journalists. The Honours Board is a small but meaningful tribute to their dedication and contribution to the game in our city.”

MCA Secretary Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar also praised the role of journalists in building Mumbai’s cricketing reputation. He said, “Sports journalists have been an important part of Mumbai cricket for many years. Through their consistent coverage, they have preserved Mumbai's rich cricketing history, bringing the sport closer to the people. With this Honours Board, MCA recognises their hard work and longstanding association with Mumbai cricket.”

Several dignitaries attended the event at Wankhede Stadium. Among them were Clayton Murzello and G. Viswanath from the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai. Their presence added significance to the ceremony, which celebrated the lasting contribution of journalists to the growth and legacy of Mumbai cricket.
