The head coach of the Indian side, Gautam Gambhir, has revealed his new mission after winning the T20 World Cup 2026, thanks to the massive victory by 96 runs against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He stated that winning an Olympic medal holds much more value and importance than winning or lifting the WC trophy.

During an exclusive interview with Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir shared his views regarding his coaching tenures. When he was asked about his thoughts on leading the blue brigade to an Olympic Medal in 2028, the head coach stated that his current focus is instantly on the bilateral series.

“Even during my playing days, I never thought that far ahead. That is still very distant. For me, every series matters. I will continue as long as I can perform well. The next series is against Afghanistan, followed by a tour of Sri Lanka. My entire focus is on that. To be honest, I haven't even thought about the ODI World Cup yet—that is still a year and a half away.” Gambhir said in the interaction.

Gautam Gambhir aims to win Olympic Medal

Gambhir also reckoned that securing the gold medal at the multi-sport event for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side would command more respect than winning a cricket event featuring the limited teams.

“The Olympics come after that. If there is someone better than me who can lead the Indian team to victory, they should be coaching. If I am the best fit, then I should do it. You’re right. I believe an Olympic medal is as important as a T20 World Cup—perhaps even bigger. I feel that while the T20 World Cup features 20 teams, the entire world participates in the Olympics.” Gambhir stated.

Under Gambhir, the blue brigade, in the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, has been excellent in breaking multiple records in limited-overs cricket. They won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in 2025, along with massive success in the white-ball bilateral. He, however, couldn’t win the home series against South Africa and New Zealand in the longest format.
