A 17-year-old Sachin Tendulkar saved India from a defeat against England at the Old Trafford. During the second innings of the Test, when India was chasing a target of 408 runs, Sachin, who was then only a 17-year-old and 112-day-old teenager, scored an unbeaten 119-run knock to save his team. His partnership with Manoj Prabhakar absorbed the pressure India sustained for a couple of wickets early in the innings.

England in their backyard was top of the game in the contest. An opening stand of 225 runs cemented a foundation for a big first innings total of 519 runs. Then the captain of the England cricket team, Graham Gooch (116), Mike Atherton (131), and Robin Smith (121*), stood like a wall in front of the Indian bowling line-up.

Team India, showing no intention to lay down, scored 432 runs in the phase of the match. Mohammad Azharuddin, the then captain of India, played a brave 179-run innings. Sanjay Manjrekar missed his century by only seven runs. The home team, with Allan Lamb's 109, prepared themselves to offer the visiting team a defeat.

Sachin made the difference

India lost their openers early in the second innings, and the pressure went right on the middle-order batting order. Manjrekar again scored a half century, but the match-saving batting came from a young Sachin Tendulkar. Against bowlers like Eddie Hemmings and Angus Fraser, he faced 189 deliveries and remained unbeaten for 119 runs. In the first innings he got 68 runs in his bag. As proper support, he got Manoj Prabhakar, who played a 67* run knock.

England had to relinquish their desire to thrash India in the high-scoring contest as the match ended in a draw.
