Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign beginning, the Royal Challengers Bangalore gave a hint of heading towards a name change. In a video shared by the franchise on social media, the management looked to get rid of the word ‘Bangalore’ from the name of the franchise and ‘Bangalore’ will be replaced by ‘Bengaluru’ in the name of the franchise, keeping it in sync with the city’s new name as well.

RCB to change its name

However, since the first season of the Indian Premier League in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore has kept the franchise’s name intact despite the city’s title changing from Bangalore to Bengaluru as well. Notably, it happened in 2014 when it changed from Bangalore to Bengaluru. But, that didn’t change in the name of RCB.

However, before the IPL 2024 season, RCB finally seemed to be in the process of making the change as well.

In its 16 years of participation in the IPL, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have never won the league title. However, the name change could chang the fortunes of the franchise a little but there remains no guarantee in it as well. Another IPL side, Punjab Kings, had changed its name (earlier known as Kings XI Punjab) but that didn’t lead to any luck to their fate as well. Even the Delhi Capitals, earlier known as the Delhi Daredevils, also changed their name but they too haven’t won an IPL title yet.
