Sanju Samson

Chances going to waste and early potential waning away is a common sight in Sanju Samson. Often he'd start the IPL looking like it's his season only to wither away four games in as both his and his franchises fortunes crumble.

Rahul Dravid's protegee thrust into the Royals side at the tender age of 19, he had all the promise early on. An ODI debut followed in 2 years. Sanju Samson though seemed to be a promising player in the wrong era. MS Dhoni, the legend was around when Sanju Samson started. Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan came next. Dinesh Karthik had a stint as well in between. In the meanwhile it was Sanju Samson waiting for his chance.

He went through an odd phase where he'd be picked for T20s when the ODI World Cup was around and ODIs when the T20 World Cup was around. He'd perform but the low scores around his sparkles would leave him to the phrase of a player not grabbing his chances. An ODI average of 56 and three T20i Centuries since 2024 though was evidence that this is a player who can dream.

He dreamt, he got his run as an opener, he cemented his spot and it was rolling. Pushed to the middle order, though for Shubman Gill, India continued to experiment with his career. Form went, the chance to open came back but the runs didn't. The World Cup came and Ishan Kishan took his chance to cement the openers spot. Sanju Samson on the bench one more time. He sat on the sidelines throughout 2024 wartching the team do their thing.

Now it looked likely again. Loss of form to Abhishek Sharma and an abundance of left-handers though gave him his chance once more. Potentially playing for his international career, Sanju Samson needed to go big. In the age of power hitting and wild swipes, Sanju Samson has stood out with his steady base and the gift of timing like another right handed opener.

Clean hits, timing and power is what the man from Kerala is about. It all came to fore. A toned and measured knock against West Indies to take India to the Semi's. In the Semi's it was Sanju Samson playing the shots of the tournament, pulling Jofra Archer into the stand with ease. He wrote his own story. Three games, 275 runs and a strike rate of 199. Only one batter going faster then him in the tournament, Finn Allen.

The pressure was on and Sanju Samson dared to dream. He believed and killed the Finals with another magnificent knock. From not starting, Sanju Samson walked away with the man of the tournament award. He joins company with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah as Indians to win the award in T20 World Cups. He also joins Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi with fifties in both stages of the knock-outs. It was a period of fantasies and Sanju Samson has finally arrived giving his fans a moment to rejoice. They stood by him, justice was asked and justice has been delivered.
