Gill Taken to Hospital After Neck Pain

Gill came out to bat at No. 4 for India in the first innings on Saturday morning but left the field after playing only three balls because of severe neck pain.

He was taken to Woodlands Hospital by ambulance, wearing a cervical collar, a few hours after retiring hurt on Saturday, November 15. He is being treated by Dr. Saptarshi Basu. According to hospital sources, an MRI scan was done soon after he arrived at the hospital.

Gill looked clearly uncomfortable during his short stay at the crease on the second day. He scored only four runs off three balls before retiring hurt and walking off while holding his neck. The BCCI first called it a “neck spasm” and said he was under observation, but concern increased when it became known that he had been taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel dismissed claims that Gill’s heavy cross-format workload caused the problem. Morkel said the discomfort was likely due to “a bad night’s sleep” rather than fatigue, and added that Gill is “very fit” and careful with his fitness.
