After a series of speculations, Shubman Gill has been named as the captain for India's upcoming 5-match Test series against England, starting from June 20 at Headingley Carnegie.

India will face the host nation with almost a new-look squad, which will contain a very limited number of experienced players. After the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, BCCI selectors took their time to decide whom to offer the duty of leadership role of one of the most dominating forces in the cricket world.

Three names were in speculation among cricket fans: Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh, and Gill. Despite Bumrah having previous experience leading Team India in Tests, his workload management is the issue that the board officials have to resolve.

Gill experienced limited number of matches as a captain so far

Pant, who remains an exciting character in the middle order, experienced a tumultuous time with Lucknow Super Giants as the skipper. So, Gill remained as the only option to be selected.

The right-handed top-order batter, yet to gain experience as a Test format captain, had a successful stint in the blue in the T20Is. The Punjab-born cricketer led India in five T20Is, winning four, and in ODIs, he is already vice-captain of the Men in Blue Brigade. His captaincy skills caught eyes most with Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 25 IPL matches, he guided Gujarat in 14 wins and 11 losses.

India squad for England Test series:
