The Indian women’s team was met with an unexpected visitor during their training session at the R. Premadasa Stadium on September 3 in Colombo, as a snake appeared in the ground. The reptile, known as a common rat snake or ‘Garandiya’ in Sinhalese, is a familiar sight at the venue.

The same reptile also appeared during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) games and the ODI fixture between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in July. The greyish-brown snake was seen moving along the drains and stands while the Indian players were going through their net session from the centre wicket to the nets area.

“It’s not venomous. It doesn’t bite. It’s a Garandiya, just looking for the rats.” One of the officials expressed. The moment created a light-hearted atmosphere among the Indian players as they made amusing reactions to the players, support staff, and the media representatives. The Blue Brigade is scheduled to take on Pakistan in their second World Cup encounter at this venue on October 05.

In the opening game of the tournament, India earned a huge 59-run victory over Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The home side batted first to post 269/8 in their allotted 50 overs of the first innings, thanks to twin half-centuries from Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur as they shared a fabulous 103-run stand for the seventh wicket.

With the ball, Deepti picked up three crucial wickets, while Sneh Rana and Shree Charani got two wickets each. The rest of the bowlers of the attack also chipped in with one wicket each to bundle out Sri Lanka for 211 runs in the second innings, as none of their batters were able to convert their starts into big scores.

Pakistan, however, made a poor start to the campaign, having been bowled out for 129 runs in the first innings, which Bangladesh chased down quite comfortably by seven wickets with nearly 19 overs to spare. Rubya Haider remained unbeaten on 54 runs in 77 balls at a strike rate of 70.13.
