Taijul Islam breaks Shakib Al Hasan's all-time Test record for Bangladesh

On the fourth day of the second and final Test of the home series against Ireland, the Bangladesh left-arm spinner Taijul Islam created history, as he surpassed the legendary Shakib Al Hasan to set a new Test record for the national team.

At the end of Ireland’s first innings of the ongoing Mirpur Test, Taijul Islam equalled Shakib Al Hasan in the list of most Test wickets by a Bangladesh bowler. While Taijul bagged four wickets in that first innings, he recorded 246 Test wickets, an equal number of Test wickets by a Bangladesh bowler, which Shakib Al Hasan previously held the record alone.

On the fourth day of the Mirpur Test, while Bangladesh set a monumental 509-run target for Ireland in the fourth innings, Taijul scalped three wickets to surpass Shakib Al Hasan to set a new record for most Test wickets by a Bangladesh bowler.

In the sixth over of the fourth innings, Ireland lost their first wicket, as Taijul trapped Irish captain Andy Balbirnie (13) for an lbw dismissal to become the leading Test wicket-taker in Bangladesh cricket history.

With two more wickets on the same day, Taijul finished the day with 249 Test wickets, as the left-arm spinner is one wicket away from becoming the first Bangladesh bowler to record 250 Test wickets.
