The International Cricket Council (ICC) is mourning the tragic loss to the game following the news of the passing of the international umpire, Bismillah Jan Shinwari. He was a member of the ICC International Panel of Umpires. Shinwari officiated in 25 ODIs and 21 T20Is, making his debut in the game during the 50-over fixture between Afghanistan and Ireland in Sharjah in December 2017. 

Shinwari was a respected figure on both the domestic and international stages of the game. He passed away at the age of just 41, due to an illness. Born in 1984 in Afghanistan, Bismillah Jan Shinwari developed a deep love for the game where sport was not the first option. There are limited details of his early life, but his dedication towards the game was incredible as he pursued umpiring, a role that requires commitment to the sport.

“ACB’s leadership, staff, and entire Afghan Atalan family are deeply shocked and saddened by the demise of Bismillah Jan Shinwari, a respected member of Afghanistan’s elite umpiring panel. It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of Mr. Shinwari’s demise following an illness. "Bismillah Jan was a great servant of Afghan cricket.” The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) posted its tribute to the umpire on Tuesday.

Bismillah officiated in numerous high-profile games across formats. According to the ACB, he was part of 34 ODIs, 26 T20Is, 31 first-class, 51 List-A, and 96 domestic T20 fixtures in his career. His portfolio reflects his versatile and reliable character as an umpire. Due to his calm and decision-making character, he was also a favorite among the players.

Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, mourned Bismillah’s death and expressed condolences to his family. His contributions to Afghanistan cricket extend beyond the umpiring record. He also played a pivotal role in the promotion of the game where cricket later became a national pride with the success of the national side and their players. His work also helps in narrowing the gap between domestic and international cricket, bringing them to the global standard.

Shinwari’s legacy will remain an inspiration. Afghanistan continues to grow as a cricketing nation. His untimely passing has left a void, but his contributions will be remembered among the Afghanistan cricket and beyond for years to come.
