Afghanistan’s outgoing coach, Jonathan Trott, has spoken about his time with the team. His time as head coach of Afghanistan ended after the team was knocked out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.

This was Afghanistan’s second win in this edition of the tournament. However, they lost to New Zealand and South Africa at the start. Because of those losses, Afghanistan did not qualify for the Super Eights stage.

It was Trott’s final match as head coach. He led the team for more than three years. During this time, the team performed very well. One of their biggest achievements was reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the Caribbean.

Trott said he has many great memories from his time with the team. He was happy to see the players grow as individuals and as a team.

Trott Feels Grateful After His Final Match

“I always feel very fortunate to have many memories as a player and now as a coach,” Jonathan Trott said.

He spoke about special wins during his time with Afghanistan. He remembered the win against Pakistan in Chennai in a 50-over World Cup match. He also talked about beating England and winning two matches in St. Vincent. He said these were special World Cup moments.

Trott also said the team achieved many other good results. They won bilateral series and recorded first-time wins against Pakistan, Bangladesh away from home, and South Africa. He said these were important steps for the team.

He added, “I feel very fortunate to have coached great players and good people. They are a good group of players, but there are still areas to improve.”

Plans for the Future

Trott said the team needs to improve its fast bowling. He explained that the team depends a lot on spin bowlers. He said they must develop more seam bowlers to support the spinners.

He also said this will help the team in different conditions, like the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Namibia. He believes the team is improving its batting strength as well.

Trott said if the seam bowlers improve, the team will be able to compete better around the world.
