Virat Kohli's ODI future in doubt ahead of Australia tour?

With less than a month to go ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia, there is no clarity to the BCCI selectors on their former captain and one of the vital members of the 50-over side, Virat Kohli’s availability. Revsportz revealed that the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, recently got in touch with the batter regarding his ODI future.

However, there is a lack of communication from Kohli, who has already retired from the two other formats of international cricket. The team management wanted both Kohli and Rohit Sharma to feature in the India A series against Australia at home. Expectations are high from both India players as the national team looks to start their future map for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Neither Rohit nor Kohli has played competitive cricket in the last five months since the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which could make it hard for them to get back in rhythm and sharpness for international assignment.

BCCI selectors lack clarity on Virat Kohli as ODI future hangs in balance

Many expected Kohli to make his last trip to England for the Test series, but his retirement from the longest format came as a shock. Recently, BCCI shared the footage of Rohit practicing alongside KL Rahul at the board’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, suggesting that the current captain is preparing hard for the Australia series, due to start on October 19.

There is no doubt about Kohli’s greatness in the 50-over format. The right-handed batter is the third leading run-getter of the format ever, with 14181 runs in 290 innings at an average of 57.88 and a strike rate of 93.34 with the help of 51 centuries and 74 half-centuries at the best score of 183.

But cricket, and especially batting, is about rhythm. Many greats of the game have failed in finding form after a huge gap in the middle. And this could be the same case with the Delhi-born. The India-A series was important for him, along with Rohit. But if he wants to be part of the ODI World Cup 2027, then it will be wise to continue playing the format regularly.
