The incident happened late on the evening session of the fourth day of the third Test between England and India at Lord’s when the visiting captain, Shubman Gill, walked into the middle as they aimed a fourth-innings chase of 193 runs. He was in tremendous form in the series so far with a 147 in the opening fixture of the series at Leeds before punching a 269 in the first innings of Edgbaston and adding another 150+ in the second innings.

However, for any batter, it’s the hardest time to bat, and India had already lost two wickets to feel the heat of the scorecard. Ben Duckett, who had a verbal spat with Gill, towards the end of the third day due to Zak Crawley wasting time of Jasprit Bumrah’s over, teased Gill by commenting that 600 runs would be enough for the Punjab-born.

‘600 runs and he is done for the series. 600 runs is enough for this fella. The left-handed opening batter expressed as he rushed near Gill from his fielding position in the gully. Gill went past Rahul Dravid during the second innings of the Lord’s to score the most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series in England.

Gill had his issues at the start of the innings. The right-handed batter couldn’t put the bat on the ball for the three deliveries before driving the full-length delivery through covers to open his account in the second innings. There was one delivery from Brydon Carse that went past the outside edge of Gill’s blade to which the umpire raised his finger, but the replays helped the Indian captain.

However, it couldn’t last long as Carse wrapped the batter on his pads with a nip backer. As Gill’s balance was not there, he fell off the head and got beaten on the inside edge and got stuck on the knee roll. The replays show three reds to send the batter back to the pavilion.

India lost their night watchman, Akash Deep, on the last ball of the day as they finished with 58/4 with KL Rahul standing unbeaten on 33 runs in 47 balls. They have six wickets in hand and 135 runs to make on the fifth day.
