In the T20 World Cup 2024, all eyes will be on the Pakistan cricket team. The Babar Azam-led side finished as runners-up in the 2022 edition. However, the team struggled in the ODI World Cup last year. Subsequently, the captaincy shifted from Babar Azam to Shaheen Afridi in T20Is, but this change was short-lived as Azam was reinstated as captain just weeks before the 2024 T20 World Cup.
For the T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan’s squad selection has faced criticism, with Azam Khan bearing the brunt of it. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi even remarked that he wouldn’t let Khan near the team due to fitness concerns. A viral video circulating among Pakistan cricket fans shows the team in a training session, appearing to enjoy themselves.

During the session, Babar Azam is heard calling Azam Khan something that has sparked debate online. Some believe he used the slang term “Gainda” (a derogatory term for overweight people), while others think he said something else.

Azam Khan has faced significant scrutiny and criticism for his performances with the national cricket team. During the recent T20I series against England, Azam struggled with the bat and dropped a catch, contributing to Pakistan’s series defeat. This led to widespread criticism, with many questioning his fitness and even his selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Speaking on Azam Khan, the former Pakistan opener also criticized the wicket keeper batter on his weight.
“He has to lose weight, and that has to be done on a personal level. He has to improve his diet. But if he does not want to lose 10 kg for his country, then how will it work out? There is a lot of difference between international cricket and league cricket,” said former Pakistan skipper told while speaking to SportsTrends.
