India captain Shubman Gill produced a masterclass in grit and timing on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston, remaining unbeaten on 114 as India posted 310 for 5 at stumps. It was Gill’s seventh Test century and his second in as many matches, once again coming at a time when India desperately needed composure and control in the middle. Batting at number four, Gill weathered the storm with patience, crafting his knock off 216 deliveries, including 12 boundaries.

One of the more intense moments of the day arrived when there was a quick face-off with England fast bowler Brydon Carse, who attempted to distract Gill by faking a no-ball signal in his run-up before the 34th over. Unfazed, Gill moved away from his stance, leaving Carse visibly frustrated
. But nothing could disrupt his flow. His confidence reached a high point when he knocked Joe Root for a boundary to reach his hundred, seeing yet another memorable milestone in his Test career.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Meanwhile, provided strong support at the other end. After KL Rahul was out for 2 early, Jaiswal showed remarkable discipline as he mixed caution with flair. He added a very important partnership with Gill of 66 after which he evaded England’s probing lines but capitalized on loose balls.
His composed innings of 87 anchored India’s top order until he was dismissed by Ben Stokes, just 13 runs short of a deserved century.

Gill-Jadeja Partnership Stabilizes Innings After Collapse

Following a double blow in the middle session—losing Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy in quick succession—Gill ensured India did not unravel. He stitched an unbeaten 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who also looked solid on a pitch offering little assistance to bowlers.

With England applying consistent pressure and trying unconventional tactics, Gill held firm. His hundred, completed with a boundary behind square, stood out not just for its runs but for its resilience. Alongside Jaiswal’s fighting 87, Gill’s innings became the highlight of a day where India battled both conditions and opposition to finish strongly.
