Handshake drama returns during India vs Bangladesh toss

There was no customary handshake between the two captains of India and Bangladesh at the toss ahead of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Group A match at the Queen’s Park Oval in Bulawayo. After a delayed start due to rain, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field first on a damp surface, which was under the cover for a decent amount of time.

Bangladesh regular captain Mohammad Azizul Hakim Tamim sidelined himself because of illness, as vice-captain, Zawad Abrar, stood at the toss with Ayush Mhatre leading the Indian side. The absence of a handshake at the toes was noticeable before the start of play, as no official comment was made by either team regarding the incident.

A similar situation took place during the senior level game last year when India and Pakistan captains did not shake hands at a toss during the Asia Cup 205 which brought the diplomatic relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, it has been the same case between India and Bangladesh of late, with multiple scenarios happening.

The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) requested the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) management to release the left-arm Bangladesh pacer, Mustafizur Rahman, while the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has maintained that they do not want their team to play the T20 World Cup matches in India, having written two letters to the International Cricket Council on relocating their games to Sri Lanka.

India did not get a sweet start with the bat as they lost their first two wickets in 3 overs for just 12 runs on the board before watching the back of Vihan Malhotra for seven runs in 24 deliveries to be reduced to 53/3 before the halfway mark.

However, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhigyan Kundu put up a strong partnership of 60 runs for the fourth wicket, where the former smashed a fine knock of 72 runs, thanks to his six boundaries and three sixes, while Kundu remained unbeaten on 63 runs as India reached 192 for the loss of six wickets in 39 overs before rain halted the proceedings.

Brief Scores: India U19 192/6 (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 72, Abhigyan Kundu 63*, Al Fahad 2/25) vs Bangladesh U19.
