Coming into the Women’s World Cup 2025 in India and Sri Lanka, there was pressure on the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side to earn success under pressure. They had a decent preparation during the bilateral series against Australia. However, there were gaps in some departments of the game that the Blue Brigade needed to address, many of which came into the competition.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side started their campaign with two easy victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, but their biggest challenge was always going to be the three big sides- Australia, England, and South Africa in the event. They couldn’t collect a single victory against any of these sides and were in a spot of bother to get disqualified ahead of the semifinal. But they turned the clock again.

After their win in the final against South Africa at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, Harmanpreet was seen in a crazy way of handing the trophy to his team-mates. It was nearly the same as Rohit Sharma did after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 against the Proteas in Barbados.

After India’s defeat against England, they brought development in all three units of the game and earned their semifinal tickets with the victory over the New Zealand side. One of the craziest moments came in the semifinal by ruling the Australia side out of the competition with a five-wicket win, thanks to the unbelievable century from Jemimah Rodrigues.

In the final, India batted first to post 298 in their allotted 50 overs. Redemption was well and truly alive for the opening batter, Shafali Varma, who on return clubbed a fine knock of 87 runs in 78 balls at a strike rate of 111.54 with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes. Deepti Sharma smashed 58 runs at a strike rate of 100 with three boundaries and one six.

In reply, the Proteas were bundled out for 246 runs. Their captain, Laura Wolvaardt, creamed a fine knock of 101 runs in 98 balls, but that wasn’t a huge contribution to complete their chase as they fell short of the target by 52 runs.
