The former Indian all-rounder, Irfan Pathan, has questioned Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness during the third Test at Lord’s between England and India, as he compared Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes’ bowling fitness with that of the premier fast bowler. He reckoned that if those two England bowlers can bowl long spells even after several injuries, then Bumrah should be able to do the same.

Pathan addressed that Jasprit Bumrah bowled five overs and was taken out of the attack even when Joe Root came onto the crease. The former Baroda player expressed that the workload management shouldn’t come into the equation after a bowler takes a break and doesn’t play a full Test match.

“Ben Stokes bowled 9.2 overs of a marathon spell in the morning. He bowls, bats, fields, and also made a great run-out of Rishabh Pant, but there is no discussion of workload. Jasprit Bumrah played five overs, and then he didn’t bowl even when Joe Root came to bat. The workload was already managed when he didn’t play. It can’t happen when you are playing, then, you only have to win the games.’ Pathan expressed in a video.

Bumrah bowled 27 overs in the first innings and picked up 5/74 at an economy rate of under three, thanks to the wickets of Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, and Jofra Archer. Even in the second innings, he added two more wickets to the tally in 16 overs.

I thought that’s where Bumrah could have been better. And I am not saying it now, but I said it even during the commentary. Jofra Archer comes after six years and bowls a five-over spell on the fifth day. Stokes never thought of it at all. If he can bowl a nine-over spell, then India will stay behind in that passage. Now the inquiry again starts whether Bumrah will play the fourth Test of the series at Old Trafford in Manchester, even with a break of nine days between two red-ball fixtures. It’s a do-or-die game for the Blue Brigade, having been behind by a 2-1 margin.
