During the second ODI encounter between Australia and India at the Adelaide Oval, the pressure was on the Blue Brigade to make a strong return into the series and keep it alive before the third fixture in Sydney. The right-handed batter used his feet and got to the pitch of the delivery. But he couldn’t get the right elevation and timing off the blade as the mistimed shot ended into the hands of Mitchell Marsh, who dived to his right at the mid-on region to grab the catch to draw the first blood for nine runs in as many balls.

Gill started well in the clash as he drove Mitchell Starc’s full delivery for a four into the cover region before shuffling well in the middle. He is under pressure, undoubtedly having taken the ODI leadership responsibilities from Rohit before the start of the series.

Gill has overall smashed 2794 runs in 57 innings at an average of more than 57 and a strike rate of nearly 100 with the help of 15 half-centuries and eight centuries at the best score of 208 runs against New Zealand.

The Punjab-born will now need to take care of his batting for the third game. He perhaps looked to break the jail with a big shot, given Rohit was struggling on the other end, and it was important to gather runs by the end of the powerplay overs against the new ball.
