The BCCI selection committee under the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, decided to omit the premier fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, from the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia down under, starting from October 19 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The right-arm pacer featured in the Champions Trophy 2025 and, since then, played nine IPL 2025 clashes.

Mohammed Shami has overall picked up 206 wickets in 107 innings at an average of 24.05 and a strike rate of 25.80 with an economy rate of 5.58, thanks to the best bowling figure of 7/57 in an innings, celebrating 10 four-wicket and six five-wicket hauls. Shami, on his arrival in Kolkata ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26, fired at Agarkar.

“I have said this before. Selection is not in my hands. If there is a fitness issue, I shouldn't be here playing for Bengal. I think I do not need to speak on this and create a controversy. If I can play four-dayers (Ranji Trophy), I can also play 50-overs cricket.” Shami expressed in the Kolkata airport as the video went viral.

Shami reckoned that he had been playing four-day games continuously, which is proof of his fitness. He revealed that it would be the responsibility of the board to ask about his fitness, which they didn’t.

“About giving an update, it's not my responsibility to give an update or ask for an update. It's not my job to give updates on my fitness. My job is to attend the NCA (Center of Excellence), prepare, and play matches. Woh unki baat hai unko kaun update deta hai, kisne nahin diya (That's their matter who gives them updates or not). It's not my responsibility.” Shami addressed.

“Keep fighting, keep playing games. If you perform well, it will benefit you as well. Selection is not in my hands. I can only prepare and play matches. I've no objection. If you don't select me, then I will come here and play for Bengal. I've no issue with it.” Shami takes a new motivation to return to the national side.
