Shubman Gill, the Test captain of the Indian side, was in decent touch during their winning campaign of the Asia Cup 2025, but he didn’t have any milestones to show besides his hundred, and that was something on his mind. The first of the two-match Test series against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was a perfect place for him to continue the dominance. 

Shubman Gill came into the middle towards the end of the opening day and ended the day with 18 runs in 42 balls in an unbeaten partnership with KL Rahul, who smashed 53* in 144 balls. The right-handed batter got a freebie down the leg side to start his feet pumping before getting into the groove slowly with a few singles and doubles.

The Punjab-born used his feet to punch the ball with his wrist into the leg side over the mid-wicket region for a beautiful boundary. He swiveled across to Johann Layne on the front foot and pulled it powerfully past square leg for a boundary.

With a single on the fourth ball of the 56th over, Gill celebrated his half-century. He started from where he left off in England as he recorded his first home Test fifty as captain before raising his bat to acknowledge the applause. He was later dismissed for 50 runs with the help of five boundaries at a strike rate of 50.

India, on the opening day, were excellent with the ball as they bundled out the visitors for 162 runs in 44.1 overs, with Justin Greaves being the leading individual run-getter with 32 runs in 48 balls with the help of four boundaries. Mohammed Siraj picked up four wickets while Jasprit Bumrah ended with three wickets.

India had already taken a lead of over 50 runs in the first session of the second morning as KL Rahul celebrated his second Test century at home. This is also his first home Test hundred since he got out on 199 in 2016 against England in Chennai. The tough time has already begun for the West Indies, who would now go through a long time in the field.
