Shubman Gill’s priceless reaction

Team India benefitted from a sharp piece of judgment by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel on Day 1 of the first Test against the West Indies in Ahmedabad. Early in the innings, Jurel persuaded captain Shubman Gill to take a DRS against opener John Campbell, a move that quickly turned the game in India’s favour.

The moment unfolded on the first ball of the 7th over, delivered by Jasprit Bumrah. Bowling a good-length ball, Bumrah forced Campbell into a tentative drive. While some Indian fielders showed brief excitement, the on-field umpire dismissed the appeal, believing there was no clear contact with the bat.

Jurel, however, was certain he had heard something more than just the pad. Backing his instincts, he pressed Gill to challenge the call. The decision review revealed a thin edge, confirming Jurel’s sharp observation and providing India with a key breakthrough at the start of the match.

Dhruv Jurel’s Sharp Judgment Benefits India:

Shubman Gill showed hesitation at first, but after consulting with Jurel, he decided to go for the review. The wicketkeeper confidently assured his skipper that he had clearly heard a sound off the bat, which convinced Gill to take the call that proved to be the right one. Dhruv Jurel said, “ Zor se awaaz aaya hai (There was a loud noise).”

The initial replay did not provide clarity, but further review revealed two spikes—one from the bat brushing the pad and another from the ball taking the edge. With the third umpire confirming Campbell’s dismissal, the decision appeared on the big screen. An elated Shubman Gill immediately embraced Dhruv Jurel for his sharp judgment.

Mohammed Siraj (4/38) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/41) spearheaded India’s disciplined bowling effort, bundling West Indies out for 162 in 44.1 overs. Choosing to bat first backfired for the visitors, as Siraj struck early, claiming three of the top four wickets to give India full control.

Siraj and Bumrah maintained their rhythm till the end, combining for seven wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar chipped in as well. For West Indies, only Justin Greaves offered some resistance with a knock of 32. The rest of the batting lineup faltered, lacking the patience and determination required in Test cricket conditions.
