Before the start of the series, there was so much white noise about whether the former captain and the classical batter, Virat Kohli, would be able to get back his old rhythm and mojo with the bat after being out of the competitive game since the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. His last ODI encounter came in March this year during the Champions Trophy 2025.

Many claimed that Kohli should have played domestic cricket in the unofficial ODI series against Australia A at home to get the best preparation with the bat. But he didn’t, and this has resulted in two successive ducks in the first two games- one in four balls and one in eight balls.

However, Kohli left the Adelaide Oval perhaps one last time in his career by showing his gloves to the crowd. He leaves the ground with a fine record of 244 runs in four innings at an average of over 60 at the venue, with the help of two centuries at the best score of 107 runs.

In the opening game of the series at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Kohli went back for an eight-ball duck. He went for a drive away from his body against Mitchell Starc as the mistimed shot ended into the hands of the backward point fielder for an eight-ball duck. He couldn’t believe his luck after the fabulous catch.

It was a similar situation in Adelaide when India lost Shubman Gill, the captain, on the first ball of the seventh over against Xavier Bartlett. But Kohli couldn’t read the plan of the bowler as he was beaten on the inside edge to get plumb before the stumps on a four-ball duck with the bat.

Kohli’s gesture of thanking the crowd has pushed many to believe that he perhaps would retire from the format. But it’s early to say, as for now, Kohli will now only look to open his account during the third game at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
