Delhi Capitals openers provided strong start before tense finish

Delhi Capitals Women claimed their first win of the WPL 2026 after beating UP Warriorz Women by seven wickets on a last-ball thriller in the seventh match of the season on Wednesday night (January 14), as UP Warriorz Women are now the only winless team this season with three out of three defeats. 

After Delhi Capitals chose to field first, UP Warriorz scored 154/8 in 20 overs. In reply, Delhi Capitals chased down the target on the final ball of the match after losing three wickets.

UP Warriorz lost plot after Meg Lanning-Harleen Deol partnership broken

UP Warriorz opener Kiran Navgire was dismissed for a duck on the third ball of the match. Captain Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield then had a 47-run partnership for the second wicket, where Phoebe was dismissed for 27 on the first ball just after the completion of the powerplay. 

Lanning and Harleen Deol then had an 85-run partnership for the third wicket. In the 16th over, while the skipper Lanning was dismissed for 54 off 38 balls with nine fours and one six, Deol was retired out after the final ball of the next over after scoring 47 off 36 balls with seven fours. It really hurt UP Warriorz as they managed to add 13 runs in the last three overs after losing four more wickets. 

Five out of seven Delhi Capitals bowlers managed to pick up at least one wicket, while Marizanne Kapp (2/24) and Shafali Verma (2/16) got two wickets each.

In reply, Delhi Capitals had a 94-run partnership for the first wicket, where the opener Shafali Verma scored 36 off 32 balls, while her partner Lizelle Lee scored 67 off 44 balls with eight fours and three sixes. 

Captain Jemimah Rodrigues played an important knock of 21` off 14 balls, while Laura Wolvaardt also had an important finishing role of 25 not out off 24 balls, along with Marizanne Kapp (5 not out).

In the final over, Delhi Capitals needed six runs, while Wolvaardt had to score only one run to win on the final ball of the match, where she hit the match-winning four to Sophie Ecclestone. In the final over, Kapp hit a four on the third ball, but there were three dot balls in the first four balls.
