5. Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh, one of the most influential and successful captains in the history of Australian cricket, in the 5th spot of the list shows how competitive the list is going to be. From 1986 to 2003, Waugh played a total of 45 matches for Australia in The Ashes. In this number of matches, he scored 3171 runs at a batting average of 58.71, powered by the highest score of 177 not out. Ten 100s and fourteen 50s are the evidence of his class and toughness against the English bowling line-up. Ashes 1989 is considered as one of his best, as he registered two unbeaten centuries at Headingley (177*) and Lord's (152*).  


4. Allan Border

Allan Border comes in fourth place on the list. The legendary figure of Australian and world cricket played 42 matches against their greatest rival. From 1978 to 1993, during this time span, Border played 42 matches to score 3,222 runs at an average of 55.55. His batting average is powered by seven 100s and nineteen 50s. It is believed that his best Ashes moment was the second Test of the 1985 series at Lord's. He named the player of the match for scoring 196 and 41 not out, helping Australia chase down a fourth-innings target. Though, his unbeaten 200 was his best individual score in The Ashes history.

3. Steven Smith

Steven Smith, commonly known as Steve Smith, is the only active player in the list. Since 2010, one of the best batters of modern cricket has scored 3417 runs in 37 Ashes matches, including a highest score of 239. Again, in England, in the series, Smith has registered twelve hundreds and thirteen fifties. Smith's best Ashes moments were during the 2019 campaign at Edgbaston. In this match, he smashed back-to-back two centuries (144 and 142) in two innings. Smith rescued Australia from 122/8 with a magnificent 144 in the first innings. He followed it up with 142 in the second innings to lead Australia to a 251-run victory.

Sir Jack Hobbs is one of the legends of English cricket who stood tall against the fiery Australian bowling attack again and again. The classic batter played 41 Ashes games and scored 3636 runs at an average of 54.26. His run tally was boosted up by 12 centuries and 15 half-centuries.

Donald Bradman

With unmatchable stats and records, Donald Bradman needs no introduction. He is top of the chart with 5028 runs and an unmatchable average of 89.78. In 37 Ashes matches, he registered 19 tons and 12 half-centuries. During the 1930 series, Bradman scored a record 974 runs. He is also renowned for his performance in the 1936-37 series, where he captained Australia to a 3-2 series victory from 0-2 down.
