Virat Kohli top 5 test records

After Rohit Sharma's Test retirement, Virat Kohli has expressed his wish to retire from the format. The batter himself informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his desire to retire from this format of the game. He stepped down from his T20I duties just after winning the 2024 T20I World Cup. Virat, 36, close to the winter of his career, has multiple records under his belt since, and some of the records are currently looking hard to break.

Take a look at Virat Kohli's some of the best moments in Tests

Hundreds in each innings of a Test match:

Australia: 517/7d & 290/5d

India: 444 & 315

Kohli made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies and got his first Test century against Australia in Adelaide. From then, the Delhi-born batter has bagged 30 Test hundreds. Kohli took his name into the history book when he rushed for a couple of tons in both innings of a Test match. Against Australia in 2014, in Adelaide, Virat scored 115 and 141 runs in both of the innings. Though India did not manage to win the high-scoring match due to a couple of brilliant spells by Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon, who took a total of 12 wickets in the match. The host team won the match by 48 runs.

A quick 7000 runs in Test:

India: 601/5d

South Africa: (for) 275 & 189

After the era of Sachin Tendulkar and Virendra Sehwag, it was Virat Kohli who scored the fastest 7,000 runs in Test cricket as an Indian batter. He took only 138 innings to reach this milestone. The flamboyant batter grabbed his career's 7000th run in 2019 against South Africa at Pune. India was victorious in the match by 137 runs, and Virat was awarded as the best player of the contest for his unbeaten 254-run innings.

Most matches as an Indian Test captain

Virat Kohli's aggressive nature added a new layer to the Indian Test team. As an Indian captain in Test format, he surpassed former skipper MS Dhoni, who led India in 60 matches, where Virat was the leader in 68. He was the captain of his nation from 2014 to 2022, winning 40 of 68 matches and losing 17, 58. 82 was his win ratio as the Test side skipper.

Highest partnership for the eighth wicket in Tests:

England: 400 & 195

India: 631

It was an unpredictable pair in the middle of Wankhede Stadium, Virat Kohli and Jayant Yadav. They stitched together a record-breaking 241-run innings in the eighth wicket against England in 2016. Captain Virat batted at number 4 and scored a mind-blowing 235, and the number 8 batter, Jayant Yadav, got 104 to create an all-time record for India. India won the match by 36 runs.

Most runs in a match on the losing side in Tests

Australia: 517/7d & 290/5d

India: 444 & 315

In this column of records, Virat touched another Indian legend, Vinoo Mankad's Test feat. After Mankad, it was Kohli who scored 256 Test runs in a match only to be defeated by the opponent. It was a match against Australia in 2014 in Adelaide. The right-handed batter claimed 115 and 141 runs in the first and second innings, respectively. As a team, India was successful in chasing the target and lost the match.
