On the penultimate day of the BBL 2025-26 League Stage, Match 38 sees the Adelaide Strikers confront the Melbourne Renegades, from the Adelaide Oval on Saturday night, January 17. After finishing in 7th Place, the Adelaide Strikers have already been eliminated from playoff contention. After showing some form against the Sydney Sixers in their previous game, they managed to pull off a three-wicket victory. At this point, it was simply too late for them to build any momentum into the playoffs. With nothing left to lose, the Adelaide Strikers will certainly want to conclude their season on an uplifting note by taking home this consolation win.

Similarly to the Adelaide Strikers, the Melbourne Renegades have also failed in their attempt to qualify for the playoffs. As such, this game is a chance for the Renegades to play for pride. The Renegades finished with only three wins out of their entire season, a truly disappointing showing for them after having higher expectations than how they actually performed. Furthermore, the Renegades will certainly want to finish on a high note with this match as their final league stage game. Ultimately, both of these teams will certainly try their best to entertain their supporters prior to the tournament transitioning to its knockout phase.

While batters across the globe are dominating the Twenty20 format, Hasan Ali, star pacer of the Pakistan cricket team, delivered a maiden over in the Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Big Bash League 2025-26 (BBL 2025-26) match. Ali secured a maiden over when his team, the Adelaide Strikers, was trying to protect a total of 165.

Strikers went to bat first at the Adelaide Oval as Thunder won the toss and decided to bowl first. The bowling attack of Thunder did a decent job by restricting the opposition to 165 runs for 8 wickets. Wes Agar, with 3 wickets, was the best bowler for Sydney Thunder.

The match turned into a thriller ride during the second innings. Matthew Gilkes and captain David Warner, the opening pair of the Adelaide Strikers, stitched together a partnership of 73 runs. When these two batters were in the middle, the momentum was slightly towards their team. But the middle order of Sydney Thunder, which collapsed suddenly, made the contest interesting.

After the opening stand of 73 runs, only Nic Maddinson was able to score a two-digit individual total for Thunder. Meanwhile, when Warner and Gilkes were on the track, batting with confidence, Ali claimed a maiden over. He came to bowl his first over of the match for the 4th over of the second innings when left-handed Matthew Gilkes was on strike. From the beginning of the over, the Pakistani pacer maintained a wicket-to-wicket line to leave the batter craving for some room. The batter, who found no space to swing the blade, was forced to defend all six deliveries of the over.

Sydney Thunder needed 13 runs to win in the last 6 balls of the match, which they could not get. Strikers won the match by 6 runs, and Hasan Ali concluded his 4-over spell with a 5.50 economy rate, powered by a maiden over and a wicket in the bag.

The South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi made his Big Bash League debut in the 23rd Match of the BBL 2025–26 season. The experienced left-arm spinner for the Adelaide Strikers had an excellent game against the Perth Scorchers at the famous Perth Stadium.

The 35-year-old, who has played over 300 matches in T20 leagues across the globe, made an immediate impact. Shamsi struck in just the second over to get the best of a well-set Mitchell Marsh, giving the Strikers a much-needed break after seeing the excellent start by the home side.

Shamsi celebrated his first wicket in the BBL match in his special way. He removed his shoe and made a playful “phone call” gesture, a celebration fans have seen many times in other T20 leagues. The moment added excitement and quickly became a talking point of the match.

Shamsi’s Strong Spell Not Enough for Strikers

Shamsi continued his fine spell by striking again in the same over. He dismissed Cooper Connolly for a three-ball duck, putting extra pressure on the Scorchers’ batting lineup.

Later in the innings, the South African spinner picked up his third wicket by removing Scorchers captain Ashton Turner. Shamsi finished with excellent figures of 3 for 30 from his four overs, helping reduce Perth from a strong 72 without loss to 153 for 8.

Despite Shamsi’s impressive debut and a four-wicket haul by Lloyd Pope, the Adelaide Strikers failed to chase down the target. They lost the match by 33 runs, having lost three of the five matches played this season. At the moment, the Strikers, led by Matthew Short, are ranked sixth in the eight-team points table of the BBL 2025-26.

In the 17th game of the BBL 2025-26 on Wednesday (December 31), Adelaide Strikers star Chris Lynn stunned everyone with his sharp throw that resulted in a run out to trouble the Brisbane Heat.

After the hosts Adelaide Strikers chose to field first, Brisbane Heat had a poor start, and Chris Lynn made the situation worse for the visitors. Before that run out, Heat were batting at 20/3 in 5.2 overs.

Max Bryant pushed the ball to the point and ran for a single, while Chris Lynn quickly went for the ball and threw at the striker-end stumps, as the ball directly hit the stumps, while Matt Renshaw went in danger of losing his wicket.

In the TV review, Renshaw was out as his bat was just behind the crease, while the ball hit the stumps, and the bails were off the wicket. Renshaw was dismissed for only six runs, as Heat lost four wickets for only 20 runs in 5.3 overs.

Brisbane Heat were bundled out for only 121 runs in 19.4 overs. Only two batters managed to reach the 20-run mark in that innings. While Matthew Kuhnemann scored 31 not out off 22 balls with one four and three sixes, Hugh Weibgen scored 28 off 33 balls with one four and one six.

The Heat were once battling at only 21/5 in six overs. Due to some late performances, Heat managed to score 100+ runs in the first innings. While the top five batters failed to reach double-digit scores, the next four batters managed to score double-digit runs.

Among the Strikers, Jamie Overton got three wickets (3/19), Liam Scott (2/12) and Hasan Ali (2/29) picked up two wickets each.

Chris Lynn scored match-winning 79 not out

In reply, Adelaide Strikers successfully chased the 122-run target in 14.1 overs after losing only three wickets, where the opener Chris Lynn played the match-winning knock of 79 not out off 41 balls with six fours and six sixes.

In his second BBL match, the batter displayed his amazing hitting skills by smashing three sixes and a boundary in a row.

According to the information published in Cricket.com.au, "Hailing from an Indian background, with his parents still living in Mumbai, Jerssis Wadia's story has been one of persistence. Part of the Adelaide Strikers U19s program before Covid struck, he returned to Adelaide once borders reopened and has been biding his time on the South Australian Premier Cricket circuit since the 2022/23 summer, where he has played for Adelaide, East Torrens, and Tea Tree Gully."

The left-handed batter joined the Adelaide Strikers for the BBL 2025-26 season as the replacement for star keeper-batter Alex Carey. He joined the team as a local talent. The batter scored only 7 runs when he made his Big Bash League debut against the Melbourne Stars. In the second game, which was against Brisbane Heat, the 24-year-old showed his true colors.

Both teams will look to strengthen their position as the tournament steps into its next phase.

The Adelaide Strikers Women are currently fourth in the points table. They have one win from two completed games, and a further match had no result due to rain. The Strikers have been in good early form and will be looking to carry on that momentum on Sunday with another win.

The Perth Scorchers Women are positioned sixth with one win from three matches. Two losses have been part of the journey so far for the Scorchers, and they will look to bounce back. Improvement in rhythm, getting back to winning ways, and collecting important points will be what the Scorchers aim for to rise up the order.

AS-W vs PS-W: Pitch Report

The Junction Oval pitch is very good for batting, especially for teams with a chase.. Batters that spend time at the crease will score freely due the surface playing consistent and offering value for shots. Fast bowlers won’t get very much help and the spinners might see some help in the first few overs. Captains might elect to bowl first with the good chasing conditions.

The Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025 goes ahead with Match No. 9, where Adelaide Strikers Women (AS-W) will play against Melbourne Renegades Women (MR-W) on Friday, November 14 at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide. This will be the second match of the day. Both teams recently played each other in the T20 Spring Challenge in October, so they know each other well.

The Adelaide Strikers Women did not get a full game in their first match of the season because rain stopped play. Their game against the Melbourne Stars Women ended without a result. Before the rain came in, Amanda-Jade Wellington bowled very well for the Strikers, taking 2 wickets for 20 runs in her 4 overs. However, the Strikers had given away 184 runs in 20 overs and could not start their chase properly.

The Melbourne Renegades women have started their season strongly. They won both of their matches by successfully chasing the targets set by Brisbane Heat Women and Sydney Thunder Women. With two wins, they are currently at the top of the points table and will want to continue their winning momentum in this match as well.

  • Melbourne Renegades Women Won: 12

AS-W vs MR-W: Pitch Report

The Karen Rolton Oval has hosted 31 WBBL matches since 2018. The pitch gives a fair chance to both batters and bowlers. Batters can score runs if they play carefully, and bowlers also get some help, especially spinners as the match goes on. Teams that win the toss usually choose to bat first here because batting first has often worked well at this ground. The same is expected in this match.

The overseas player draft for the 2025-26 seasons of the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) and Big Bash League (BBL) will be held on Thursday, June 19, ushering in a fresh season of top-class cricket in Australia. The WBBL draft starts at 4 PM AEST and is followed without a gap by the BBL draft. These drafts enable every one of the eight clubs in each of the competitions to choose from a large number of international players to complete their rosters.

How the Draft Operates

The draft is a formal four-round format.

  • Round 1: Platinum players only
  • Round 2: Platinum and Gold
  • Round 3: Gold and Silver (in reverse order)
  • Round 4: Silver and Bronze

Every team needs to pick at least two overseas players except for their pre-signed players. Clubs can miss only one round. Every team has already pre-signed one overseas player prior to the draft, and players have to be assigned to a round according to how much they are earning on their contracts. Clubs can also pick a fourth overseas player as a substitute.

Draft Order

Draft order was determined through a weighted lottery based on the standings of the prior season.

  • WBBL Round 1 Order: 1. Sydney Sixers, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Stars, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Thunder, 7. Melbourne Renegades, 8. Brisbane Heat.
  • BBL Round 1 Order: 1. Brisbane Heat, 2. Adelaide Strikers, 3. Melbourne Renegades, 4. Perth Scorchers, 5. Hobart Hurricanes, 6. Sydney Sixers, 7. Melbourne Stars, 8. Sydney Thunder.

There was a trade in the BBL draft, with the Thunder and Scorchers exchanging picks in the second and third rounds.

Pre-signed Players (Prior to Draft)

  • Adelaide Strikers: Laura Wolvaardt, Jamie Overton
  • Brisbane Heat: Nadine de Klerk, Colin Munro
  • Hobart Hurricanes: TBC, Chris Jordan
  • Melbourne Renegades: Hayley Matthews, Tim Seifert
  • Melbourne Stars: Marizanne Kapp, Tom Curran
  • Perth Scorchers: Sophie Devine, Finn Allen
  • Sydney Sixers: Amelia Kerr, Babar Azam
  • Sydney Thunder: Chamari Athapaththu, Sam Billings

Notable Overseas Nominees

More than 600 overseas players have thrown their names into the pool for the upcoming WBBL and BBL drafts, which promises to be a great mix of talent from around the globe. The BBL has some exciting names included in the nominations, including Pakistani superstars Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, and Mohammad Rizwan. England's T20 hitters include Jofra Archer, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Alex Hales. All of these big names are among the nominations for the BBL, along with New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, and Kane Williamson, who has declared himself available for three matches. Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman and West Indies speed demon Shamar Joseph round out the marquee BBL names.

For the WBBL, we have some Indian stars with award-winning resumes. Jemimah Rodrigues, Shikha Pandey, and Yastika Bhatia have all made nominations to the process. West Indies' Deandra Dottin and Pakistan's Fatima Sana also add some firepower to the draft. England has featured great players like Sophie Ecclestone, Heather Knight, Danni Wyatt, and Alice Capsey, while South Africa's Shabnim Ismail and Chloe Tryon help improve the quality of nominations.

Player Salaries

WBBL:

  • Platinum: $110,000
  • Gold: $90,000
  • Silver: $65,000
  • Bronze: up to $40,000

BBL:

  • Platinum: $360,000-$420,000
  • Gold: $300,000
  • Silver: $200,000
  • Bronze: up to $100,000

Retention and Replacement Rules

Each club can have a single retention pick, typically for players who played or signed for the team the season before. Replacement players will need to be selected from the draft pool unless sanctioned under exceptional circumstances.

Season Timeline and Scheduling Conflicts

  • WBBL: Late October to early December
  • BBL: Mid-December to late January

The BBL would face schedule conflicts with other competing leagues such as ILT20 (Dec 2 - Jan 4) and SA20 (Dec 26 - Jan 26). Yet, Cricket Australia still has hope that international stars could be free for the second part of the season and playoffs.

Although there were initial worries about the clash of T20 leagues causing overseas players to miss the BBL, Dobson was feeling positive about this season having better outcomes than in earlier years. He highlighted the fact that instead of a mass exodus at the later stages of the BBL, it's possible that some of the players playing in the ILT20 would be available for the back end of the tournament and finals. He added that this coincided with Australia’s Test stars’ availability, as no international matches are scheduled in January after the Ashes series.

"I think so," Dobson told ESPNcricinfo. "We probably pay more attention to our teams and players and who wants to come and play in the Big Bash. And we're hearing from players that they still love coming to the BBL. It's a bucket list for many of them. We're always looking at windows and player availability, but ultimately, I think our job is to make sure our comp is as appealing as it can be."

The 2025 drafts promise high drama and strategic decisions as clubs shape their overseas core. With global superstars up for grabs and new scheduling dynamics in play, this draft season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet.
