Australia showed their strength at home once again, defeating their arch-rivals England to win the 2025-26 Ashes series 4-1. The Men in Yellow sealed the series with a five-wicket win in the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday, January 8.

This is Australia’s fourth consecutive Ashesseries win at home, a streak that started with the famous 2013-14 series. Back then, the Michael Clarke-led team were at their best, handing England a 5-0 whitewash as they left Australia completely broken and defeated.

There are some patterns and similarities between the two series, which are 12 years apart. Here are five similarities between Australia’s wins in the Ashes 2025-26 and the 2013 series.

1. A Left-Arm Pacer Leads the Wickets

The 2013-14 Ashes is remembered for Mitchell Johnson, who took 37 wickets at an average of 13.97. He troubled England throughout the series and finished as the leading wicket-taker, 15 wickets ahead of Ryan Harris. He was also named Player of the Series.

Similarly, Mitchell Starc led the 2025-26 Ashes with 31 wickets at an average of 19.93, finishing nine wickets ahead of Brydon Carse.

2. A Left-Handed Australian Opener Tops the Runs

In the 2013-14 Ashes, David Warner scored 523 runs at an average of 58.11, including two centuries and two fifties. He dominated the England bowlers.

In the 2025-26 series, Travis Head, who was not originally an opener, scored 629 runs in five Tests. He hit three centuries and ended as the top scorer of the series.

3. England Faces a No.3 Crisis

England’s success in Australia depends heavily on the No.3 batter. In 2013-14, Jonathan Trott left the tour early after scoring 10 and 9 in the first Test. Joe Root and, later, Ian Bell struggled in the role.

In the 2025-26 Ashes, Ollie Pope scored only 125 runs in three Tests. England then tried Jacob Bethell, who struggled at first but later scored a memorable century in Sydney.

4. Hotspot and Snicko Issues

The 2025-26 Ashes saw several problems with the Decision Review System, especially Snicko, which caused confusion due to delayed or missing spikes.

Similar issues were seen in the 2013-14 series, including Joe Root’s controversial dismissal in Perth despite no clear evidence from Hotspot.

5. Veteran Retirements and England Coach Under Pressure

During the 2013-14 Ashes, Jonathan Trott and Graeme Swann retired during the series. England coach Andy Flower faced heavy criticism and later stepped down.

In the 2025-26 Ashes, veteran batter Usman Khawaja retired during the series due to injury. England coach Brendon McCullum is also under pressure after a poor campaign and questions over the ‘Bazball’ approach.

Usman Khawaja announced his retirement from Test cricket on January 8, 2026, marking the end of his journey in Test cricket at Sydney Cricket Ground. It was a special moment because SCG was the same place where he made his Test debut for Australia back in 2011.

The emotional moments unfolded during the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025–26 series against England. Right after getting out in Australia's second innings, Khawaja took a moment to thank the ground, the fans, and the journey that shaped his career.

As he walked off the field for the last time in Test whites, Khawaja went down on his knees and performed sajda, thanking God for his long career. The SCG crowd responded with a warm standing ovation, celebrating one of Australia’s most respected batters.

A meaningful farewell and a proud Test career

Khawaja came in to bat at No. 5 while Australia were chasing England’s target. He looked uncomfortable at the crease and was bowled by Josh Tongue for six runs, scoring one boundary during his short stay.

Even though the inning was brief, the moment that followed stood out. Khawaja raised his bat to acknowledge the crowd before kissing the pitch and performing sajda, an Islamic prayer that shows humility and thankfulness. It reflected both his faith and his respect for the game.

The Pakistan-born Australian finished his Test career with 6,229 runs from 159 innings at an average of 42.95, including 16 centuries and 28 half-centuries. The Ashes 2025–26 series was difficult for him due to back issues, but his impact on Australian cricket will be remembered for years. His farewell at the SCG was a fitting and emotional end to a memorable Test journey.

Australia completed a commanding Ashes 2025–26 campaign by defeating England by five wickets in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The hosts chased down a target of 160 on the fifth day to seal the series 4–1 and underline their dominance at home once again.

England began the final day at 302 for eight and tried to delay the result with a strong lower-order effort. Jacob Bethell stood tall with a brilliant career-best 154, showing great patience and control at the crease. His innings gave England some hope of setting a tricky target.

That resistance ended when Mitchell Starc removed the last two wickets to finish the innings. Starc ended the series with 31 wickets, making him one of the biggest match-winners of the Ashes and helping Australia stay firmly in control throughout the contest.

Australia stay strong in Ashes and World Test Championship race

Australia started the chase positively as openers Jake Weatherald and Travis Head added quick runs at the top. The two brought up a good opening stand before England struck back with two quick wickets to create some pressure on the home team for a while.

Marnus Labuschagne played the anchor role in settling nerves with a fluent knock in the middle order. Cameron Green and Alex Carey then took over, adding an unbeaten stand to guide Australia safely towards the target without further trouble.

Carey hit the winning runs before the tea break as Australia sealed both the match and the series. The victory also strengthened Australia's lead at the top of the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 standings. They now sit well clear of the chasing pack, while New Zealand and South Africa follow behind. England, meanwhile, slipped further down the table after another tough tour.

England team head coach Brendon McCullum was unexpectedly at the focal point on Day 1 of the fifth and final test match of the Ashes series at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Cameras caught him cheekily checking the answers to a crossword puzzle in the dressing room, creating a lighthearted moment in an otherwise tense Test match.

The funny incident happened during the 39th over of England’s innings. After a shaky start that saw England lose three early wickets for 57 runs, Joe Root and Harry Brook were rebuilding the innings at the crease. Off the field, McCullum looked relaxed as he flipped through his crossword booklet before sneaking a look at the answer page.

Commentators were quick to notice the moment on live television and could not resist a joke. One quipped that McCullum should be careful about checking answers on national TV. The clip quickly spread on social media, with fans sharing memes and poking fun at the England coach in good spirit.

Rain Interrupts Play as Root and Brook Anchor England’s Innings

Finally, despite the early setbacks, England showed some control with the bat. Root and Brook looked calm and confident, dealing effortlessly with the Australian bowlers. At Tea, England managed to get 211/3, the pair stitching an undefeated 154-run partnership that gave the visitors much-needed stability.

Just as England started to build momentum, the weather intervened. Poor light forced the umpires to monitor conditions late in the session, which led to an early Tea break at the ground. Soon after, rain arrived and play was stopped completely.

Although the grounds staff worked hard to get the game going again, conditions did not improve. No further play was possible after Tea, and Day 1 ended early. Even so, England will take confidence from the strong partnership, finding some solid answers on the field in a series where consistency has been hard to come by.

<![CDATA[Ashes 2025–26: Spectators set attendance records in AUS vs ENG 3rd Test at Adelaide]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ashes-2025-26-spectators-set-attendance-records-in-aus-vs-eng-3rd-test-at-adelaide/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ashes-2025-26-spectators-set-attendance-records-in-aus-vs-eng-3rd-test-at-adelaide/ Mon, 22 Dec 2025 15:15:17 GMT

After easy wins in Perth and Brisbane, Australia took an unassailable 3–0 lead in the five-match series in just 11 days. This equals the shortest time in which the Ashes have been decided in the last 100 years.

Packed crowds and huge TV audiences saw the 'Baggy Greens' win the third Test in Adelaide by 82 runs on Sunday, December 21.

Since regaining the Ashes in the 2017–18 season, Australia have now retained the title in five straight series. This means Australia will have held the Ashes for more than nine years when the next series is played in England in 2027.

The total attendance of 223,638 was the highest ever for a Test match at the Adelaide Oval, breaking the previous record of 199,147 set in 2017–18. It was also the biggest Test match crowd in Australia outside of a match played at the MCG.

Record Crowds and Huge Viewership

The Day 1 crowd of 56,298 was the highest ever for a single day of cricket in Adelaide. TV audiences across Kayo Sports, Foxtel, Seven, and 7plus Sport peaked on Day 5 as Australia moved closer to victory. An average of 2.11 million viewers watched the action during the final day.

The final session of Day 5 became the sixth session of the series to average more than two million viewers. It was also the eleventh session of Test cricket in 2025 to cross the two-million mark.

Strong Digital and Global Reach

Cricket Australia’s digital platforms also saw very strong engagement. Around 1.34 million people in Australia visited cricket.com.au and the Cricket Australia Live app during the Adelaide Test. These users generated 11.6 million sessions, which was 25% higher than the third Test of last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Fans watched a large amount of video content, with views from Australian users rising by 151% compared to last year’s third Test against India. The global reach of the series was also clear, with 232 million video views across Cricket Australia’s social media channels during the Test.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg praised the achievement, saying that retaining the Ashes in just 11 days was a great accomplishment. He said it showed the strong preparation and performance of the players, coaches, and support staff. He also added that the atmosphere at the NRMA Insurance Adelaide Test was excellent, with record crowds and huge TV audiences making it a special moment for Australian cricket.

<![CDATA['Worst Team in 15 Years?' – Marnus Labuschagne responds after Australia seal Ashes series]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/worst-team-in-15-years-marnus-labuschagne-responds-after-australia-seal-ashes-series/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/worst-team-in-15-years-marnus-labuschagne-responds-after-australia-seal-ashes-series/ Sun, 21 Dec 2025 12:32:16 GMT

Australia’s early dominance in the Ashes has silenced many pre-series predictions. After sealing a 3-0 lead with their win in Adelaide, the hosts put the series beyond England’s reach. The result gave Australia breathing space with two Tests still to play. It also set the stage for a strong response from players who had been written off before the series began.

One player who did not shy away from speaking his mind was Marnus Labuschagne. Known for his energy and honesty, he responded to the talk around the series. Many experts had expected a tight contest. Instead, Australia dominated from the opening Test.

Labuschagne also addressed claims that this was the weakest Australian Ashes side in years. Some commentators had gone as far as calling it the poorest team since the home loss in 2010–11. Sitting on a 3-0 lead, those comments now look wide of the mark. Australia have turned doubt into confidence with strong performances.

‘Job’s Not Done Yet’ – Labuschagne Keeps Australia Focused

Speaking on-field to ABC Sport after the match, Labuschagne said, “All the media hype, we have to say it, being called the worst Australian team in 15 years… it’s nice to be sitting where we are, three-nil.” The comment was calm but sharp. It summed up Australia’s response to all the criticism before the series began.

His words carry extra weight given how the matches have played out. England was outplayed in Perth and at the Gabba. Even in Adelaide, where the contest looked closer, Australia always stayed in control. Expectations of a fierce battle never truly became reality. Despite the strong position, Labuschagne made it clear that Australia are not satisfied yet. He sent a clear message to England, saying, “The job’s not done yet, we want to make sure it’s 5-0 and really take that urn.” The focus now is on finishing the series strongly.

Labuschagne also played a big role in Adelaide with his fielding. In the fourth innings, he pulled off two stunning one-handed catches in the slips. He first dismissed Ollie Pope on Day 4 and later removed Will Jacks on Day 5. As the series heads to the Boxing Day Test, England face the challenge of avoiding a whitewash and restoring some pride.

In a show of complete dominance, Australia retained the Ashes after winning the first three Test matches of the ongoing series against England. In the third Test at the Adelaide Oval, Australia once again outplayed England and won the match by 82 runs.

Australia batted first in the third Test and scored 371 runs in their first innings. Usman Khawaja played a solid knock of 82 runs, while Alex Carey scored an excellent 106 runs to help the team post a strong total.

England struggled with the bat in reply and were bowled out for 286 runs in their first innings. Ben Stokes was the top scorer for England, making 83 runs.

Australia Continue Dominance Against England

Speaking of the second innings, Australia came out to bat with confidence. Travis Head played a brilliant knock, scoring 170 runs off 219 balls. Alex Carey also contributed well with 72 runs. Australia posted 349 runs in the second innings and set England a challenging target of 435 runs.

In reply, England struggled against Australia’s strong bowling attack. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Lyon picked up three wickets each, while Scott Boland claimed one wicket. Despite some fighting partnerships on Day 4, England were bowled out for 352 runs. Australia won the match by 82 runs.

The dominant win has raised questions about Ben Stokes’ captaincy and Brendon McCullum’s role as head coach, as England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ approach failed against tough opposition.

“This is very disappointing for us,” Stokes said. “Everyone is hurting and emotional. But we still have two more matches to play, and our focus now has to be on those games.”

Australia Seals the Ashes Series

Australia have shown strong dominance in the series despite missing key players. Captain Pat Cummins returned for the third Test after missing the first two due to injury. Josh Hazlewood did not play in the series, while Steve Smith missed the Adelaide Test due to illness after leading the team in Perth and Brisbane.

Australia had already taken a 2-0 lead after winning the first Test in Perth and the second in Brisbane. The win in Adelaide gave them an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. As a result, Australia have retained the Ashes trophy.
