Australia Women kicked off their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign with a strong victory against New Zealand Women in Indore. Batting first, at the Holkar Stadium, the Australians in mid-innings posted a solid total of 326 runs in 49.3 overs. Ashleigh Gardner was the star of the innings with a superb century, scoring 115 runs off just 83 balls. Phoebe Litchfield helped set a strong foundation with a quick 45 runs, whilst Kim Garth and Ellyse Perry supported with useful runs. Despite New Zealand’s bowlers Lea Tahuhu and Jess Kerr picking three wickets each, the Australians managed to reach a winning score.

Chasing 327, New Zealand had a nightmare beginning, losing two wickets without scoring a run. Captain Sophie Devine played a fighting knock of 111 runs but did not get enough support from the other end. Amelia Kerr made 33 and Brooke Halliday 28, but the rest of the batting could not handle the pressure. Australia bowled tightly, with Annabel Sutherland and Sophie Molineux taking three wickets each, sealing an 89-run win.

AUS-W vs NZ-W: Who said what?

Ashleigh Gardner (Player of the Match):

“Yeah, it was pretty special. When I got out in the middle, I had clear plans just to get myself in and stick to my strengths. We always knew that we needed a big total. The boundaries are small and the wicket is good. So making sure, once I got in, I capitalised on that. Knowing 320 on the board, we had something to defend. I guess you look at how Devine batted, she made it tough for our bowlers. I think that would be the trend in this World Cup, get enough runs on the board. I was just trying to keep it really simple. I feel like when I am hitting the boundaries, I go really hard at it and look to take singles and doubles that kind of gets me into my innings and if I get a boundary, that helps me settle in. We bat genuinely all the way down. We have the confidence that even if we are 5 down for not too much on the board, we have the players to come in and change the game. I love the position to come in at that time and change the game.”

Sophie Devine (New Zealand Captain):

“I am most proud of the fight that the team shown. A couple of years ao we would have thrown the towel around 150 but we kept coming and going. The result didn't go our way but the effort makes me proud. It was against the best bowling attack of the world. It's a hard one. You always want to be on the winning team. We will reflect on it later. Job well done but still job needs to be done in this World Cup. It shows the mindset of the group. We know they have a deep batting order. We missed a little bit on line and length and got punished on a really flat surface. Amelia and Lea were fantastic. Everyone knows their role which makes it a fantastic team. Taking big wickets is important for the team. Illing has got some pace and swings the ball being a left hander. Really excited to see where she can take the game. It's about who can hold their nerves longer. We need to keep fighting back in the game in both innings. It's a great cricket wicket, great outfield and small boundaries.”

Alyssa Healy (Australia Captain):

“Umm, yeah it did actually. I think when Sophie is going as good as she did, you are never really feel comfortable. But full credit to the girls, for hanging in there and hit our lengths to get the job done. It is a balance, we ended up somewhere above 300 when we were struggling in the middle stages. As a batting group, we need to make sure to be precise with what we are doing. I think, she is just continuing to mature as a cricketer with bat and with ball. Middle order coming in and score hundreds when we were in trouble is a real asset. I am really proud of Ash today, she can enjoy this moment. I mean, it is lucky that Ash got a hundred, otherwise Kim Garth would have got the player of the match award. It is huge, it is not kind of like-for-like. Awesome that Sophie can also bowl for us in the powerplay. So there are the little things that you want to get right, hopefully we can take momentum in the next game in Colombo where conditions might be different. Beautiful cricket ground. Really enjoyed playing here, I would love to come here again.”

<![CDATA[Top 3 reasons why New Zealand-W lost to Australia-W in Women's World Cup 2025 match 2]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/top-3-reasons-why-new-zealand-w-lost-to-australia-w-in-women-s-world-cup-2025-match-2/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/top-3-reasons-why-new-zealand-w-lost-to-australia-w-in-women-s-world-cup-2025-match-2/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 22:40:43 GMT

In Match 2 of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, Australia Women achieved a great victory against New Zealand Women, winning by 89 runs at Holkar Stadium in Indore. After winning the toss, Australia opted to bat and scored a substantial 326 runs all out in 49.3 overs. The star of the innings was Ashleigh Gardner, who smashed a brilliant 115 off just 83 balls at number six. Phoebe Litchfield added quick runs with 45 off 31 balls, while Kim Garth scored 38 and Ellyse Perry made 33. For New Zealand, Lea Tahuhu and Jess Kerr were the most effective bowlers, taking three wickets each.

In reply to the tough target of 327 runs, New Zealand Women suffered a poor start with their first two openers getting out for ducks in the first two overs. This put them under enormous pressure against a disciplined Australian attack. Captain Sophie Devine provided a fighting knock, scoring 112 runs off 111 balls, but did not receive sufficient backup from her teammates. The balance of the batting crumbled and New Zealand were bowled out for 237 in 43.2 overs. Australia’s bowling attack kept it tight, with Annabel Sutherland and Sophie Molineux picking up three wickets each to close it out. Below are the main reasons for New Zealand Women defeat:

1. Early Wickets in the Chase

New Zealand’s chase was off to the worst possible start, losing both openers without scoring. The early collapse meant they were always behind the required run rate. With so many runs needed, the pressure only grew stronger, leaving too much work for captain Devine alone.

2. No Big Partnerships Around Devine

Although Sophie Devine played a captain’s knock with her century, no other batter stayed long enough to form a big partnership. Small stands were broken quickly by Australia’s clever bowling. Without support at the other end, Devine’s effort could not change the result.

3. Gardner’s Match-Winning Century

Australia looked in trouble when they were 128/5 but a brilliant innings from Ashleigh Gardner steadied their ship to post 326, she scored an explosive 115 runs off 83 balls. Thanks to her innings, Australia scored more than 300 which was too big a target for New Zealand.

In Match 2 of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, Australia Women (AUS-W) will square off against New Zealand Women (NZ-W) at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, on Wednesday, October 1, at 3:00 PM IST. The World Cup is co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with India hosting the larger number of matches.

Australia are one of the hot favorites going into the tournament, having recently beaten India in a series by a scoreline of 2-1. They did have a loss to England Women in the warm-up matches, though. Australia is by far the most decorated team in the history of the Women’s World Cup having won the tournament on seven occasions and will be looking to start their campaign off with a win in the quest for their eighth title.

New Zealand Women have been facing struggles of their own. They suffered defeats in their warm-up matches, which will have hurt their confidence. New Zealand Women have one World Cup title, but Sophie Devine will want to get her side off to a good start against their Trans-Tasman rivals. A win will set the tone for the 2025 Women’s World Cup campaign.

Australia Women (AUS W) are set to face New Zealand Women (NZ W) on October 1, 2025, at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The Aussies arrive with confidence, having recently secured a 2-1 series win against India, although they did suffer a warm-up loss to England. As the most decorated team in Women’s World Cup history with seven titles, Australia will be keen on beginning their campaign strongly, setting the tone for yet another pursuit of silverware in the prestigious tournament.

In contrast, New Zealand Women enter the competition on a more challenging note, having endured a string of defeats in recent months, including warm-up losses that exposed their inconsistencies. With only one Women’s World Cup title in their history, the White Ferns will be desperate to rediscover their form and turn things around on the big stage. Their primary focus will be on starting the tournament positively against their trans-Tasman rivals. A victory in the opener would not only boost their morale but also provide momentum to push through the competition with renewed determination.

Defending champions Australia Women enter this World Cup with a squad strong enough to make another deep run. They recently sealed a 2-1 away win against India Women, a result that sets them up nicely for the challenges ahead.

On the other hand, the New Zealand Women enter the World Cup fresh from a 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka Women at home, which puts them in good standing. The conditions in India, however, will be a very different test, and the New Zealand side will need to be fully switched on to succeed here.
