Australia Women beat Pakistan Women by 107 runs in Match 9 of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on October 8, 2025. It was an eventful match with ups and downs, in which Australia made a strong comeback after a weak beginning. Batting first, they were at 76/7 but with Beth Mooney's stunning innings of 109 runs off 114 balls. She was ably assisted by Alana King, who remained unbeaten on 51 off 49 balls. They assisted Australia in posting a healthy total of 221/9 in 50 overs.

Pakistan made a solid start to the game with the ball, and their bowlers caused trouble for the Australian top order. Nashra Sandhu was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for 37 runs, while Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal also bowled tightly. However, Pakistan failed to finish the job as Mooney and King built a record ninth-wicket partnership of 106 runs. This late recovery completely changed the momentum of the match in Australia’s favour.

Chasing 222 runs, Pakistan’s batting lineup collapsed under pressure. They lost five wickets for just 31 runs inside nine overs and never recovered. Sidra Amin fought hard with 35 runs, but no other batter stayed long enough at the crease. Australia's fast bowlers, Kim Garth (3/14), Megan Schutt (2/25), and Annabel Sutherland (2/15), bowled with good control and discipline and ensured that Pakistan could never get back into the match. This defeat was Pakistan's third consecutive loss, and Australia's second victory in a row propelled them to the highest point in the points table. Below are the main reasons for the Pakistan Women defeat:

1. Lack of Batting Partnerships

The Pakistan side struggled to build partnerships when chasing. After losing early wickets, none of the batters were able to settle in or support Sidra Amin. Incorrect shot selection and pressure on the bowlers by Australia resulted in a rapid downfall.

2. Failure to Finish Australia’s Innings

Pakistan had the excellent opportunity to get Australia out cheaply when they were 76/7. But their bowlers failed to capitalize on that advantage. The impact of Beth Mooney and Alana King's 106-run partnership for the ninth wicket turned the match on its head and gave Australia a considerable total to defend from that point onward.

3. Poor Fielding from Pakistan Players

Pakistan's fielding also dropped off during the last 20 overs. Fatima Sana admitted that the team's energy dropped, which affected their standard of play. Missed opportunities and slow reactions in the field allowed Australia to seize momentum and finish the game strongly.

Australia Women registered a dramatic comeback to defeat Pakistan Women in Match 9 of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Batting first, Australia were in big trouble at 76 for 7, but Beth Mooney played a brilliant knock of 109 runs from 114 balls. She added a record 106-run partnership with Alana King, who stayed unbeaten on 51 off 49 balls. Their efforts helped Australia recover and register a good overall of 221/9. Pakistan’s spinners, especially Nashra Sandhu with 3/37, bowled well early on but could not stop the late fightback.

In reply, Pakistan’s batting collapsed as they were all out for just 114 runs in 36.3 overs, losing the match by 107 runs. Sidra Amin was the only batter who fought with 35 runs, while the others failed to build partnerships. Australia bowlers, commanded by Kim Garth (3/14), Megan Schutt (2/25), and Annabel Sutherland, were terrific with the ball and never let Pakistan settle. This massive victory provided Australia with two crucial points and lifted their confidence before facing India in their next match.

AUS-W vs PAK-W: Who Said What?

Beth Mooney (Player of the Match):

"I’d rate this innings pretty high because we were in a tricky situation. I just focused on building partnerships with Kim Garth and Alana King. It was about sticking to the plan and playing late in subcontinent conditions. Alana was brilliant, she’s such a great teammate and always lifts the group. It was tough out there, but worth it in the end."

Fatima Sana (Pakistan Captain):

"We were on top in the first 20 overs, but Mooney played really well, and our energy dropped. That’s something we need to fix, maintaining intensity till the last ball. Our decision to bowl first was based on the pitch and our spin strength, but we need more partnerships in the middle and better energy in the field. Consistency is the key going forward."

Alyssa Healy (Australia Captain):

"Two points, and we move on. That’s one of the best innings I’ve seen Moons play in my career. At one stage, we thought 150-160 would be a good total, but she got us beyond 200, which was massive. We didn’t adapt well early on, getting out in similar ways, but we’ll learn and be ready for India next. Our depth really showed today, everyone’s contributing, though we’d like more runs from the top order. There are plenty of positives from this win, and we’ll focus on those."

Pakistan Women stunned the defending champions and record seven-time champions Australia Women in their league stage fixture at the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 at Colombo on Wednesday (October 8), where the Aussies were struggling deeply at 76/7. But then, Beth Mooney and Alana King rescued the Aussies with a stunning record-breaking ninth-wicket partnership.

After Pakistan Women sent Aussies to bat first, the defending champions were seven down at just 76 runs, while they lost their eighth wicket at 115 runs when Kim Garth was dismissed for 11 runs. But Beth Mooney stuck to her crease, while Alana King provided strong support to guide Australia Women to a strong challenging total.

Mooney and King set up a 106-run partnership for the tenth wicket, as that wicket was only broken on the final ball of the innings, where Mooney was dismissed after scoring a brilliant 109 runs off 114 balls with 11 fours. Meanwhile, King remained not out at 51 runs off 49 balls with three fours and three sixes.

Alana King scored a half-century at no. 10

With her 51 not out, Alana King set some great records, which are as follows.

  • King became the first player to hit a half-century among the no.9 or lower-order batters in the Women's Cricket World Cup history.
  • King became the first player to record a 50+ score at no.10 or lower batting positions in the history of Women's ODI.

Alana King hit 3 sixes at no.10

While Alana King hit three sixes after coming to bat at number 10, it was surely a special one.

  • King became the first player to hit three sixes after coming to bat at no.8 or lower positions in the history of the Women's Cricket World Cup.
  • King also became the first player to hit more than one six after coming to bat at the no.10 or lower positions in the Women's ODI history.

Beth Mooney and Alana King set a century partnership for the 10th wicket

Mooney-King's century partnership was another special story in that innings. They added a 106-run partnership for the 10th wicket.

  • It is the highest Women's ODI partnership for ninth or lower wickets. The previous record was a 77-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Ashleigh Gardner and Kim Garth (Australia Women) against South Africa Women at North Sydney in 2024.
  • It is the highest partnership, actually the first century partnership, for the eighth or lower wickets in the history of the Women's Cricket World Cup. The previous record was a 76-run partnership between Kristen Beams and Alex Blackwell (Australia Women) against India Women at Derby in the Semi-final of the World Cup 2017.

A wonderful day for Nashra Sandhu. The Pakistan Women's team spinner was absolutely on her business with brilliant bowling against the star-studded Australia Women's team (AUS-W vs PAK-W) on Wednesday during a match of the ICC Women's World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

Before the match, the Australia Women's cricket team was the favorite to win the match, as they were one of the hot favorites to win the prestigious trophy as well. The team led by Alyssa Healy was quickly exposed by Pakistan's top bowling attack. The bowling unit of Pakistan started to crack the defense from the beginning of the first innings. Australia lost their first wicket on the last delivery of the seventh over of the innings. From then on, they never looked confident enough to get back on the track strongly.

Ellyse Perry, who came to bat at number 3, could have helped her team to bounce back, but a smart delivery from Sandhu knocked her out of the crease. It was a absolute jaffa from the Pakistan spinner. On the turning track of Colombo, she forced the batter to play the ball using the front foot.

An unplay-able delivery from the Pakistan spinner

The spinner pitched the ball on the line of the off stump, in the middle, and the right-handed batter came out of the crease and used his left foot to push the ball on the off side. After hitting the deck, the ball moved away from the batter, missed the bat entirely, and went into the gloves of the wicketkeeper. Pakistan keeper Sidra Nawaz did not make any mistake to uproot the stumps.

Ellyse Perry quickly turned to get back on the crease, but she was away only by a few inches when the keeper dislodged the ball. The bat was on into the crease, so after a review, the third umpire gave it an out. Ellyse Perry departed for 5 off 11.

Key Players

Bismah Maroof

The Pakistan captain is pushing for the allowance of Pakistan cricketers in other leagues. She understands the sides lack of ability under pressure. Maroof herself probably feels the struggle considering her slow strike-rate, and knows that she needs to start looking for change if she is trying to bring a change in Pakistan Cricket. With a game to go against Australia, she has one last chance to make an impact and try creating something for the future.

Meg Lanning

Meg Lanning is constantly improving when it comes to steering an innings. She is consistent and steady, and looks a very reliable presence when the team is entering the back end of its innings. With a lot of skill, she is always a safe bet given the runs she offers.
