It was a do-or-die clash for the Pakistan side as they headed into their last group-stage encounter against India at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The net run rate was vital for the qualification of the Pakistan side. They won the toss and decided to make use the fresh surface first with the new ball.

India went off to a flying start with the bat as Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Aaron George put up a strong opening stand of 46 runs for no damage in just seven overs. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had made his way to 30 runs in just 19 balls before Mohammad Sayyam came up with the most thrilling overs of a cricket game.

On the third ball of the eighth over, the left-handed opening batter looked to pull the short ball and could get it high in the air before the fielder dropped it. But he threw it to the stumps as the batter was short of his crease, but he didn’t get dismissed only due to the lack of attentiveness from the wicket-keeper.

However, Pakistan got their man on the very next delivery as Suryavanshi edged the back of a length delivery into the hands of the wicket-keeper, Hamza Zahoor, and went back to the dressing room for 30 runs in 22 balls with the help of five boundaries and one six. India’s captain, Ayush Mhatre, made his way into the middle.

The right-handed batter negotiated the first ball of Sayyam before edging the next delivery into the gloves of the keeper. He just threw his bat at the angled delivery and got dismissed for a two-ball duck. In a blink of an eye, India lost their two strong players while Aaron Gorge was dismissed on the first ball of the next over.

In a span of four ball, India lost three wickets and didn’t get a single run of the board. Pakistan got a new energy in themselves as the blue brigade struggled to make their way to 51/3 in 11 overs.

Brief Scores: India U19 66/3 (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 30, Mohammad Sayyam 2/32) vs Pakistan U19.

India’s first clash of the Super Six stage of the ongoing U-19 World Cup 2026 was against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The pressure was on the captain of the blue brigade, Ayush Mhatre, to deliver with the bat, but the Mumbai-born turned up with the ball during the fixture. He picked up three wickets in the crucial encounter.

Ayush Mhatre's first wicket came against Michael Bilgnaut. It was a dream delivery for any off-spinner, as it turned sharply from well outside the off-stump and sneaked through the bat and pad, to crash into the middle stump, sending back the batter to the pavilion for a four-ball duck in the second innings.

Two overs later, on the third delivery of the 37th over of the innings, it was another delivery that turned sharply to wrap on the pads. The umpire instantly raised his finger as the batter went on the back foot and looked to turn it on the on-side. She missed as the ball came sharply off the surface and was hit on the front pad.

Ayush Mhatre picked three wickets in India's 204-run victory

On the last delivery of the same over, Ayush got his third wicket of Tatenda Chimugoro on 29 runs. The batter backed away and looked to smash the ball down the long-on region, but he didn’t get the expected elevation and ended up being caught on the boundary rope by the fielder.

Watch the video here:

Zimbabwe got bundled out for just 148 runs in 37.4 overs, with only Leeroy Chiwaula putting 62 runs as an impressive knock in 77 balls with the help of seven boundaries and one six. Mhatre ended with figures of 3/14 in four overs, while Udhav Mohan recorded 3/20 in his 6.4 overs.

Earlier in the game, India posted a massive score of 352 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Vihaan Malhotra posted an unbeaten knock of 109 runs in 107 balls, shouldering on seven boundaries, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhigyan Kundu celebrated their respective half-centuries in the innings.

Brief Scores: India 352/8 (Vihaan Malhotra 109*, Abhigyan Kundu 61, Talendra Chimugoro 3/49) beat Zimbabwe 148 (Leeroy Chirowala 62, Ayush Mhatre 3/13) by 204 runs.

Continuing the winning momentum, the India U-19 team claims their third consecutive victory in the ongoing U-19 World Cup 2026. Captain Ayush Mhatre’s well-controlled half-century confirms a win over New Zealand on Saturday (January 24) at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The India vs New Zealand U-19 World Cup 2026 match was arranged under heavy weather, which made the batters' task difficult by some margins. Batting first, New Zealand managed to score only 135 runs against their 10 wickets in 36.2 overs. Ambrish R. S. and Henil Patel claimed 4 wickets and 3 wickets, respectively, to keep the young Kiwis on the back foot.

The New Zealand bowler found no answers against the Indian batting lineup. The DRS method reduced the target to 130, and the total number of overs in the second was 37 overs, which was enough for the Indian batting line-up to claim the match.

India U-19 skipper Ayush Mhatre, who was dealing with a bad patch, finally got his runs back in his bat.  Mhatre came to bat at number 3 and delivered a match-winning half-century. In 27 balls, the skipper delivered a 53-run knock, which will boost his and his team’s confidence for the upcoming assignments.

A winning effor from the captain Ayush Mhatre

In his 53-run innings, Ayush hit 6 sixes and 2 over boundaries to push his strike rate to 196.30. It is worth noting that he batted with a higher strike rate than the explosive opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who got 40 in 23 balls with 173.91. The initial impact Suryavanshi made helped India to reach the finish line quickly.

Meanwhile, India won the match by 7 wickets, supported by the DLS method. Ambrish was named man of the match for his bowling figure of 4/29 (8).

Good news for Indian cricket, as Ayush Mhatre is set to join the India Under-19 team after recovering from an injury. He was out from the India vs South Africa U-19 ODI series because of a wrist injury. As per media reports, Mhatre is on the way to join the team in South Africa. He is expected to join the main squad soon.

It was a setback for India, as their couple of key players – captain Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra – received news ahead of the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, which is scheduled to start on January 15. The opening match of the tournament will be held between India and the United States of America (USA). The tournament will be jointly hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

According to the latest report published by the Indian Express, Ayush Mhatre has left for South Africa to join the Indian Under-19 team after receiving permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

The final of the Men’s U-19 Asia Cup 2025 between India and Pakistan at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai saw several heated exchanges between the two sides as the Indian side was asked to chase down a massive total after they opted to bowl first, having won the toss on a flat surface, which didn’t offer any help to the bowlers.

Sameer Minhas, the opening batter of the Pakistan side, smashed a fine knock of 172 runs in just 113 deliveries at a strike rate of 152.21 with the help of 17 boundaries and nine sixes while their number four batter, Ahmed Hussain, also claimed a fantastic knock of 56 runs in 72 balls at a strike rate of nearly 80, with the help of two fours and one six.

Ayush Mhatre, the Indian captain, didn’t have a great event with the bat so far, and he continued the same off-form with two runs in just seven balls. He played an uppish shot off the full length region against Ali Raza and was caught at the mid-on region inside the ring.

Apart from the two vital knocks or even the 35 runs at number three by Usman Khan, none of the Pakistan batters contributed to the total as their middle order went through a slump in the batting department. At one stage, they were 302/3 in the 43rd over of the innings and went on to lose the next five wickets for 25 runs.

India didn’t make a good start in the chase. They perhaps were too aggressive in the chase and kept losing wickets one after another in the second innings. Vaibhav Suyavanshi played a tiny knock of 26 runs in 10 balls with the help of three sixes at a strike rate of 260.

India U-19 side now find themselves at 68/5 in their 10.2 overs and are likely to lose the contest from this position. For Pakistan, both Ali Raza and Mohammad Sayyam have picked up two wickets each.

Pakistan Under-19 is looking well controlled with their emerging pacer Mohammad Sayyam, as he picked up two crucial wickets. After departing Vaibhav Suryavanshi, he took the important wicket of India Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre and broke a crucial partnership.

Mhatre and Aaron George were stitching a partnership to stabilize the innings while Sayyam got the breakthrough. Mhatre went for 38 off 25 with four boundaries and three over-boundaries. He played the wrong shot when the partnership was on 49.

The pacer delivered a short pitch, angled out the ball, after which the batter tried to swing the bat across. The ball went high in the air as the connection was not appropriate. The keeper ran back and collected the ball nicely. A good-length ball followed by a well-running catch by keeper Hamza Zahoor forced Mhatre to go back in the dugout. This wicket can be a decisive factor in the India vs Pakistan Under-19 Asia Cup match. India is down by two wickets for 78.

Watch the dismissal of Ayush Mhatre in IND vs PAK U19 Asia Cup match

Mhatre departed for 38; Suryavanshi got only 5 runs. Pakistan's young guns are firing at the ICC Academy Ground in Dubai Sports City, UAE. The 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre has been struggling with his form for India. In the previous match, he scored only 4 runs and lost the wicket. Today, he started off the things nicely, hitting the first over-boundary of the match. But he will have to work on temperament to justify his talent.

Before the dismissal in today's match, he was out of strike for a significant time. Which perhaps annoyed him and forced him to play the wild shot. He could guide them comfortably on the off side or could leave comfortably. But in a hurry, he made the wrong call.
