During the 14th encounter of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025/26 between the Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, a hilarious reaction took place when the Hobart wicket-keeper, Lizelle Lee, missed a simple chance to run out the Adelaide batter, who was all short of the crease when the fielder threw the ball.

The incident took place on the fourth delivery of the ninth over when Patterson cut the short ball from Smith and started to run a single when the fielder, at the extra cover region, saw the delivery and threw it straight into the hands of the wicket-keeper, who fumbled to collect the ball.

The wicket-keeper collected the ball from the ground and had a shy at the batting end, by which it was enough for the batter to get back to the striker’s end. It was a hilarious situation from the game as the wicket-keeper had all the time to get the batter out, but she missed the chance. The video went viral on social media platforms.

Adelaide Strikers posted 134 runs in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Their middle order batter, Tahila McGrath and Bridget Patterson, got over 20 runs each in the innings while Amanda-Jade Wellington clubbed an unbeaten knock of 33 runs in 21 balls at a strike rate of 157.14 with the help of five boundaries as they posted 134/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Hobart completed the chase by four wickets with two balls to spare. Danielle Wyatt-Hodge creamed an undefeated knock of 72 runs in 57 balls at a strike rate of 126.32 with the help of nine boundaries. Both contributed so little that the second-highest individual score was 15 with the bat.

Hobart’s win topped the points table with eight points at a net run rate of +0.779, while Adelaide stayed at the fifth position with three points at a net run rate of +0.098.

The Australian summer is here, and that means one thing, cricket season is back! As fans gear up for months of thrilling matches and big hits, the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) have introduced an exciting new twist for the upcoming 2025–26 season. Cricket Australia has unveiled a fan-first innovation designed to make spectators feel even more connected to the game, the ‘Westpac Keep the Ball’ rule.

Under this brand-new rule, any ball that goes into the crowd during the first over of an innings can be kept by the fan who catches or collects it. Whether it’s a powerful six or a bouncing boundary, the lucky spectator gets to take home the ball as a souvenir. Once the opening over concludes, a fresh ball will be introduced for the second over, regardless of what happens in the first.

This creative move, inspired by Major League Baseball (MLB) traditions where fans keep foul balls and home runs, aims to make the Big Bash experience more exciting and personal. Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said the initiative reflects the league’s fan-driven approach. “Player connection drives the Big Bash Leagues, and this initiative demonstrates our commitment to delivering fan-focused innovation,” Dobson said.

Fans Can Now Keep Balls Hit Into the Stands During the First Over of Each Innings in BBL and WBBL 2025–26

The ‘Keep the Ball’ initiative is being introduced in collaboration with Westpac, Cricket Australia’s new banking partner. Each innings will begin with a Westpac-branded Kookaburra ball, adding a collectible touch for fans lucky enough to catch one. Umpires will have spare balls ready to ensure the game continues smoothly.

The move has already sparked enthusiasm on social media, with fans praising the idea for adding energy and excitement to the start of every match. Many believe it will encourage more families and young fans to visit stadiums and enjoy the live cricket atmosphere.

With the Weber WBBL season 11 and BBL 2025–26 just days away, this fun new rule promises to make every opening over unforgettable, blending entertainment, fan engagement, and cricket tradition in true Big Bash style.

BBL and WBBL bring new rule ahead of 2025/26 season]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/baseball-rule-in-cricket-bbl-and-wbbl-bring-new-rule-ahead-of-2025-26-season/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/baseball-rule-in-cricket-bbl-and-wbbl-bring-new-rule-ahead-of-2025-26-season/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 10:34:59 GMT

Ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), a popular baseball tradition has been allowed for the fans to keep the balls hit into the crowd for the very first time in Australia’s home summer. The new rule will be in place during the first over of each innings, allowing the fans to keep any ball in the pocket.

Those balls can come into the crowd on the full or bounce over the fence from a boundary. The innovation is being sponsored by Australia’s new banking partner. Based on the data from the last season, the ball landed in the crowd in the first over on average once every two games in the men’s event, and once in every 10 women’s Big Bash League clashes.

“Player connection drives the Big Bash Leagues, and this initiative further demonstrates our commitment to delivering fan-focused innovation. Building 'Keep the Ball' in collaboration with Westpac has been a priority since their onboarding, and we're thankful for their support to bring this unforgettable moment to life.Alistair Dobson, CA’s executive general manager of the league, said.

BBL and WBBL to allow fans to pocket balls on boundary in first over of match

The league noted that the innovation has been inspired by the traditions of Major League Baseball, where the fans have been allowed to keep foul balls and home runs for more than a century. Supporters will often wear mitts to help them catch the baseballs that fly into the crowd.

“While it adds an element of excitement to the conclusion of each innings, the stronger penalty for over rates is consistent with our ongoing commitment to keeping matches fast-paced and family-friendly.Dobson expressed that the countdown will be in place for each innings as per previous seasons.

The timer will then immediately reset after hitting zero, to five for BBL matches and 5.45 minutes for the WBBL games. If the time expires again before the conclusion of the innings, full powerplay conditions will stay for the remaining deliveries, with only two players allowed outside the fielding restriction ring.

Cricket Australia has significantly upgraded the live match-day experience by expanding its Cricket Radio feature within the official CA Live app. This new initiative, powered by NRMA Insurance, will provide real-time, uninterrupted audio commentary directly to fans’ phones for major competitions, including the ongoing Australia-India men’s white-ball series, the Ashes, WBBL, and BBL.

In a major move for accessibility, the app will now offer a dedicated Hindi-language commentary feed for attendees at the men’s white-ball matches against India. Delivered by JioStar and its popular broadcasters, this feature allows fans to enjoy the action in their preferred language by simply using headphones and selecting the feed in the app’s Match Centre.

Although it may seem like this live in-stadium commentary is new for Australian fans, English cricket venues have been doing this for a while! But rather than access via an app, spectators there use a small ear-radio device to get live commentary and critical moments of the game while watching the action in front of them.

CA Live App Enhances Accessibility and Fan Engagement

Alex Lavelle, Executive General Manager, Digital, Marketing and Communications at Cricket Australia, highlighted the innovation’s role in making the sport more inclusive. “It’s part of our commitment to making cricket more accessible and inclusive for all Australians and now we’re proud to offer audio commentary, including Hindi for the first time on the Cricket Australia Live App,” Alex said.

He added, “This innovation ensures fans can feel closer to the action and enjoy a richer live experience. Fans can access no delay cricket radio via the CA Live App for the men’s white ball series, The Ashes, BBL and WBBL.” For fans outside the stadium, live English commentary remains available nationwide through broadcast partners SEN, ABC, and Triple M. To access the in-stadium Cricket Radio, users need to download the CA Live App, enable location services, and log in with a free Cricket Plus account.

<![CDATA['Playing in overseas leagues...' - Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain reveals why he chose BBL over BPL]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/playing-in-overseas-leagues-bangladesh-leg-spinner-rishad-hossain-reveals-why-he-chose-bbl-over-bpl/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/playing-in-overseas-leagues-bangladesh-leg-spinner-rishad-hossain-reveals-why-he-chose-bbl-over-bpl/ Mon, 06 Oct 2025 18:16:04 GMT

As the winter cricket season starts, fans usually expect Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain to shine in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). But this time, the young spinner is heading to Australia instead of Dhaka.

Rishad has decided to skip the BPL and join the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL). This move shows his ambition to play and learn abroad. Last year, Rishad was signed by Hobart but didn’t get a chance to play. So, he went on to play for Fortune Barishal in the BPL, but even there, his chances were limited.

Ironically, both teams, Hobart Hurricanes and Barishal, went on to win their leagues. This year, Rishad has full permission from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and is ready for his first complete BBL season.

Rishad Hossain's overseas ambition

Rishad explained his decision clearly. “As a leg-spinner, playing in overseas leagues helps me improve both my bowling and mindset. I spoke with a few people about what would be better for my career, and everyone said Big Bash is a huge platform , so I tried my best, and by the grace of Allah, it worked out,” he said. He added that no one pushed him; it was entirely his choice. “I just asked myself what I needed to do to move forward. Playing in a big league like the BBL, in those dream venues, is a big opportunity for me.”

For a young spinner from Bangladesh, this is a bold step. He wants to test himself on faster and bouncier pitches. He also received praise from cricket legends Ricky Ponting and Aaron Finch, which motivated him even more. “It feels good when players of that stature talk about me. It motivates me to keep performing and live up to their words,” Rishad said.

The new BBL season is a huge opportunity for Rishad to develop, learn, and prove himself. As the Hurricanes look to defend their title, he can't wait to be part of it this year and not miss another season as a spectator.

<![CDATA[Ravichandran Ashwin makes massive move to sign for BBL 2025-26 with this franchise]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ravichandran-ashwin-makes-massive-move-to-sign-for-bbl-2025-26-with-this-franchise/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/ravichandran-ashwin-makes-massive-move-to-sign-for-bbl-2025-26-with-this-franchise/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 15:25:55 GMT

India’s former spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26, as it will be a landmark move to become the first capped India player in the event. The former Under-19 captain, Unmukt Chand, and former domestic player, Nikhil Chaudhary, had played the BBL in recent years.

Ashwin, who retired from the Indian Premier League a few weeks ago, has already signed up for next week’s ILT20 auction as the player with the highest base price. He will be committed to the league, which will take place between December 02 and January 04. That means that for the first three weeks of the BBL, he would remain unavailable and could join if the Thunder make it into the finals.

“Thunder were crystal clear about how they'd use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we're fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it's always better when your leader shares your mindset.Ashwin, who has 317 wickets in 329 T20s at an economy rate of just over seven, stated.

Thunder’s last four games will be on January 06, 10, 12, and 16, while the spinner is likely to be available for three games unless his UAE franchise makes an early exit. He will be under the leadership of David Warner for Thunder and could face Steve Smith and Babar Azam, who will be playing for the Sixers.

“From the first time we spoke, Ashwin impressed everyone at the Thunder with his passion, desire to win, and understanding of what makes our club special. He will bring an injection of fresh energy and world-class bowling mid-tournament, while his presence as a leader and mentor will be invaluable for our young players.Trent Copeland, the general manager of the franchise, expressed.

Thunder already has Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan on the list. They have three local spinners in Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews. Their home ground, Engie Stadium, is the most spin-friendly venue in the Big Bash League (BBL).

India’s former off-spin all-rounder, Ravichandran Ashwin, is going to be the first male player of the country to play the Big Bash League, with four clubs vying for his services to play in the latter stages of the upcoming season. The reports have claimed that Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers are the four teams chasing the veteran.

Thunder and Hurricanes are, however, the front-runners for the Indian player as the deal is likely to get finalized next week. Ashwin’s retirement has opened the door for the chance that no Indian player has been able to do in the past. Only retired players of the BCCI are allowed to participate in the overseas T20 leagues.

Earlier this year, Dinesh Karthik featured for the Paarl Royals in the SA20, while two years ago, Ambati Rayudu played for the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the CPL before playing for the MI Emirates in the ILT20. Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan have also played for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20, while Suresh Raina played for the Decan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Ravichandran Ashwin set to become first Indian to play in BBL 2025-26

Ashwin has already committed to be in the ILT20 auction in UAE, which will be next Tuesday. If he gets picked, he will have to go through the season from December 02 to January 04. The BBL, meanwhile, begins on December 14 and the home-and-away part runs till January 18, with the finals being scheduled to take place between January 20 and 25.

That means Ashwin will be available to play three to four games at the end of the season if his side qualifies for the final. BBL clubs can play three overseas players in the eleven, with each club locking those in the pre-signing and June overseas draft. Clubs can sign an additional overseas replacement player to make it seven.

The club that signs Ashwin will have to fit his salary inside their overall purse, much of which has already been allocated for most squads. Teams, however, can go over the cap by 5% in a particular year with approval from the league’s technical committee, over three years.

<![CDATA[Is the IPL taking over the Big Bash? Shocking CA move explained]]> https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/is-the-ipl-taking-over-the-big-bash-shocking-ca-move-explained/ https://www.cricketwinner.com/cricket-news/is-the-ipl-taking-over-the-big-bash-shocking-ca-move-explained/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 17:59:39 GMT

Cricket Australia (CA) is weighing a landmark shift in the Big Bash League’s (BBL) structure by allowing private investment in its eight franchises. This bold consideration comes in the wake of English cricket’s successful $2 billion windfall from selling minority stakes in The Hundred teams, a move that’s sparked fresh interest in the future of T20 franchise ownership globally.

An independent review done by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) recommended that CA consider divesting minority interests in each BBL team that might see CA pocket more than $100 million. That would be the most radical cultural change to Australian cricket since Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in 1977.

From Resistance to Reassessment

Unlike leagues such as the IPL, SA20, and ILT20, which are backed by private and corporate ownership, the BBL has remained under the control of CA and state associations since its inception. However, with top players increasingly prioritising more lucrative leagues overseas, the BBL’s appeal has declined, a trend CA is keen to reverse.

One of the main reasons CA has historically resisted private investment is the scheduling overlap between the BBL and the home Test summer. Broadcasters prefer the current format, but any involvement from private owners would likely come with demands for a standalone BBL window, enabling Australia’s Test stars to participate fully. This could trigger significant calendar reshuffles and potentially strain broadcast agreements.

Financial Pressures and Facility Upgrades

The push toward privatisation also comes at a time of tightening budgets and rising pressure on infrastructure. State associations like New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland currently don’t earn direct revenue from their home grounds. Meanwhile, iconic venues like the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) have been earmarked for major upgrades, including improvements to the fan experience and the introduction of drop-in pitches.

CA recently initiated a round of cost-cutting measures under CEO Todd Greenberg, reflecting a broader need to bolster cash reserves. The sale of BBL stakes could provide critical funding not just for the league, but for grassroots cricket and venue improvements as well.

Global Interest and Franchise Relocation

The review by BCG revealed growing global interest in acquiring stakes in BBL teams. Inspired by the fierce bidding war for the London Spirit in The Hundred, CA officials see an opportunity to capitalise on this business momentum.

But the changes might not stop at private investment. CA is also exploring a potential restructuring of the league, including the controversial idea of relocating existing teams. The Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Renegades are being considered for possible relocation to markets like Singapore or New Zealand to widen the league’s reach. Canberra has also mounted a strong case for its own team, spearheaded by Cricket ACT chairman Greg Boorer.

Alternatively, CA could choose to expand the league by offering new licences rather than diluting ownership in current franchises, a model reminiscent of the AFL’s approach during its national expansion.

Caution and Consensus

Even with the extensive research and vibrant financial reasoning, CA is expected, as reported, to adopt a wait-and-see approach. So far, it seems that during the next meeting of the board of directors, no final decision will be made, and discussion is anticipated to go on for months ahead. The chairman, Mike Baird, and CEO Greenberg are, according to sources, working to build support among stakeholders before any formal move.

Should they go ahead, this swing toward partial privatisation could help galvanise the BBL and attract big international stars with proper salary arrangements, and achieve relevancy in a saturated global T20 market. For now, Cricket Australia sits before an inflection point in its history, and the path taken could reconfigure Australian cricket for years to come.
